I need to know if I'm getting the right Cub Cadet for the job I need. I live up on a hill on about 3 acres of weeds (little grass since the drought), few sun flowers & poke plants and sand with a few fallen oak tree limbs thrown in a few areas. There are only 2 dealers in town TSC (no help and kids have played on them) and a New Holland Tractor dealer who just started handling them the day before I walked in. Problem I noticed with both right off the bat is their prices where higher than the Internet site, though I was told on a cash basis New Holland would match that price which was the Lowe's price. There goes all the points I could have earned on my credit card since they wanted to up the price $106 if I used a credit card.

Back to the case at hand I like the GT 1554 style and was hoping the dozer blade would work on smoothing out the sand in my drive but was told it was for snow work. Due to the type area I would be mowing I was told I would need the GT 2550 since it has a cast-iron transmission. They said (dealer and Cub rep) the GT 2544 wouldn't be good since it is a mulcher. I considered it due to the mowing deck would be easier for me to slide out (a 50" deck weighs more than I do). Having a tiller option way down the road might be a nice option, but then again I might never get or use anything but pull along attachments.

I'm kind of in between a rock and a hard place. If I had a trailer I could really do some shopping, but I'm stuck with delivery thus it has to come from this town and they are the only ones I know of that will repair them though someone else might since they have been sold in this town for a while at TSC. Taking their word for it I signed a purchase order for the GT 2550 (they didn't have one on display or to try out). What I would like to know is if one of the cheaper models without the hydraulics I may never use would do the job just as well. Of course with the 2550 you have one less belt to replace, but adds more transmission oil. If I ever did get into using a tiller do they work good on this model?

Also a post on a GT2544 mentioned adding a Johnny Bucket and a round Spider Harrow. What are these things and who makes them?

I've already seen the post to know when it comes time to change the oil, filters, etc. I'm going to faint at the prices and read how to break them in.

All the 2500 series decks can mulch, side discharge or bag as far as I am aware. They are identical GT's aside from deck width & engine HP. The 50" would be nice for 3 acres, but the 44" on my 2544 has been awesome. It will mow thru (just about) anything & still make it look good! DO NOT pay more than the MSRP listed on the CC website! My 2544 ran me $2999 in April, which was the MSRP then. CC did raise the price pretty much across the board now /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. Some owners clain to have been able to get the dealer to go lower than MSPR. The only way I could have gotten a break would have been to lump accessories in with the purchase. Other than that, it was pay sticker or walk.

bluestar,

From the description of your needs, I don't think this is the right mower for you. Unfortunately what IS the right mower for you would be quite expensive.

The reason I say this is that the Cubs are designed more for cutting short, well manicured lawns and they do it quite well. They have very little distance between the blades and the roof of the deck. They also have bars across the bottom of the discharge chute. Both of these characteristics cause clogging and many other problems when cutting very high, thick grass.

I would recommend that you look for commercial lawn mower companies in Stephenville. There MUST be some. Stephenville is as big as Paris, Texas and Paris has a half dozen. Some of them are Farm and Ranch stores that also carry commercial lawn mowers.

What you need is a commercial mower, even a used one, with a heavy, fabricated deck rather than the stamped decks found in homeowner units.

Do a google search for such brands as Gravely, Dixie Chopper, Hustler, SCAG, Ferris, Cub Cadet Commercial, Bad Boy, Lazer or even Dixon. Look at their websites for their dealer locater and see if they have a dealer in Stephenville. Find these commercial lawn mower dealers and see if they have used equipment or even a small commercial unit with a fabricated deck. Those guys will definitely deliver.

Also look in the Stephenville yellow pages for Lawn Mowers.

Maybe I'll see you in Stephenville soon. I rope there from time to time.

Best of luck,
Doc

Thanks for the tips Joel. I really lucked out by deciding to check these out at the CC site, else they would have added $400 to the 2050 price, $300 to a 2044 and I doubt I would have gone for the 2000 series due to cost. Even being female it was easy to see he wasn't happy with meeting CC prices and I figure if they ever do any work out of warranty they will try to make it up or if I later buy any attachments.
Being new at it they didn't know if the 1 year home warranty applied, thus for this kind of bucks the warranty's will make a difference with me.
Been a while since I have been up your way (VA, Washington closest last time) but I don't recall having seen any 1/8" stick type weeds up your way which is what is growing here mainly. After I keep it down awhile the grass might come back.

Doc,
Ouch a commercial is probably out of my price range (Geo just had transmission rebuilt and need to get vehicle that can tow a trailer for hay/mower hauling to shop too). 2nd hand commercial probably lacks warranty and would have repairs I wouldn't know how to do. Wally World Murray riding mower used in the past for doing this and handled okay but it's in need of repair. Got it running last year, but haven't had time to mess with it this one and skipped replacing part I didn't know how to last year that is why it's out again this year. Reason I came here for feedback is if I recall right CC started out making golf course mowers which is a lot different than mowing fields of native grasses & weeds, etc.

If this thing does have bars on the discharge chute or less deck clearance than the Murray has with blades then it won't be bought cause your right it will clog all the time. I'll check out the locations you gave if that happens, but like I said they will probably be out of my price range.

Dare ya to come rope my wild mule hehe. I don't get to town much, being single it's all I can do to keep up my 3 dogs, 11 cats, 2 donkeys, white mule, and 4 acres. Place needs a lot of work (paint house, chain link fence around house, fence along road, barn roof, 21 year old water pump, house AC) and I don't want to spend all the money on a mower that won't do the job so I really appreciate your heads up on the pitfalls.

Most do have an 'enclosed' discharge opening these days (bar across the bottom). It's there for the mulch plug to attach to, should you want to mulch. The larger CC GT decks may not have this. My CC 2544 (44") does. Your higher end JD, simplicity and kubota decks are wide open as well, but you are talking a LOT more money.

I wonder if you have the 3000 series confused here....the 3100 & 3200 are the Garden tractors with hydrolics, one less belt (shaft attachment), a little more oil and biger machine...The 2550 is the model size lower than the 3000 series

JTKub,
Nope I don't want to go up in price /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. The 2544 comes standard with a mulcher from what my brochure says. Site and brochure don't match on everything though especially attachments. Only mower I saw with bars a few years back had 2 bars, so one if it's not very high up might not be a problem. I don't recall them having a thick location to test cut it in, but that is what it will take to make the sale now. Don't want to be out of a lot of bucks on something what won't do the job. 5'6" weeds are only knee high or lower now (rest got mowed down) and after first mowing it will be kept down so it wouldn't be as big of a problem. I'm still not sold out, but not completely sold in either. If a Murray could handle it before then after the first cutting this might be able to do it.
They said they didn't want to sell me something that wouldn't do the job, so maybe they will work with me if this doesn't fair well after the first 2 cuttings. First cutting might clog (did even a lot higher with the Murray and tall grass) but 2nd when lower should pose no problems if it will do the job good. Only problem being is I can't afford to live & learn at this cost. Thanks for the info.

Ducati,
2500 GT series is suppose to work with a tiller, hydraulics work off of the engine somehow and not a direct-drive shaft like the 3000 series has. Now as to how well that would work on the GT 2500 series is a good question especially for the cost of the attachments.
