I need a little help with a belt problem. After 75 hours I changed the PTO belt, deck belt, blades, fluids, plugs, filters, and lubed everything. So now I’m thinking I will be set for another season and I start mowing. The first thing I notice is that the blades are not sounding like there reaching full speed, then when I get into some thicker grass they noticeably slow way down. I mow the rest of the yard while thinking what it is I may have done wrong. Everything is working fine but the blade speed is not up to speed. Also before when I would pull the PTO the belt would give a nice loud short squeal and the blade speed would be instant. Now with the new belt it will squeal longer and have the problem I mentioned above.

I looked the belt P/N up on partstree.com just to make sure the parts person gave me the right one, and it is the same belt. After mowing one more time and it still doing the same thing, I said the heck with this and put the old belt back on. When I lowered the deck to change the belt I notice that the new belt was really hanging, as if it was to long. The old belt worked much better but not quit as good as when new.

Now I go back the dealer with the story I have just told you and the first thing he said is that he can’t take the belt back after I have used it. I told him that the main thing to me is to get this mower back to mowing like it should. He than tells me it sounds like pulley problems, is told him no, because the old belt fixed it. He then tells me it’s the tension spring, I said maybe but the spring works just fine with the old belt.

I asked if they had a belt measurer to check and see if the belt I got was longer that it should be. He didn’t. I asked to see another belt so I could check them against each other. They were the same size.

So, I guess I have some off size belt on this mower and I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

Also I would like to say Hello to everyone on the board. I have been reading this board for some time and have been able to solve a lot of problems by just reading about others problems. So keep up the great work and I hope to hear from some of you soon.

Hello there! Bill-jr. I have a 2180 with 42''deck and a 2185 with a 48'' deck. Both have a main double pulley,( where the pto belt warps around.)Yet the diameter of these pulleys are a different size. they use a different size pto belt. take the old and have it sized up. do not cut in half.If your so called cub dealer won't help ya.call around like auto -zone they carry belts,Tractor supply, carry belts, even John deere will help find the right belts.I buy a lot of things for my cubs at john deere dealers. to them it's all green.

They have a measuring device at Tractor Supply stores. Take your old and new belts and size them against each other, then get a blue kevlar belt at TSC that matches the size of the old one. Problem solved, and with a belt that will last much longer than the OEM one.
