This was the end of the 2nd yr. of owning my gt2544. At the end of the season I noticed that when I would let off of the forward pedal it would continue to creep forwards until I bumped it with the reverse pedal.

At the same time it seems to me that the reverse speed doesn't seem as fast as I remember when it was new. It has approx. 100 hrs. now. Although that may be my imagination.

When I washed it down for storage I noticed grass embedded where the linkage passes through the frame to the transmission. I thought I had solved the riddle but that is not it.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what is the fix?

Thanks, Dennis

Re the power...take a look at my posts on reverse power and check the pedal linkage. Also take a look in the manual at the neutral adjustment and also check for any binding or worn springs.

Did you have the transmission fluid changed at the recommended initial time of 15 or 25 hours (I don't remember which one is the recommended time)?

I recently learned from my dealer that this is necessary because the gears in the tranny are no longer cut gears, they are pressed gears. With cut gears, the break-in debris was large enough to be caught by the filter. So just changing the filter and topping off the fluids was acceptable. But with pressed gears, during break-in you get a fine powder build-up in the fluid that won't be completely filtered out by the filter. This degrades tranny performance because it changes the characteristics of the fluid. It doesn't appear to do any damage to the tranny though. And with a serviceable tranny like ours, it's not really an issue other than it's one extra service in the life of the product.

I had the same problem with mine, a 2005 unit. I took it in for warranty and they replaced the whole hydrostatic pump (at 30hrs), and they changed the oil and filter at the same time....been better since although I only have 70hrs on mine.

Not the fluid, the filter. Fluid doesn't need to be changed, at least on the aluminum housing like mine. The recommendation in the manual is to change the hydro filter after 10 hours I believe, which my dealer said was a total waste of money.

He said, come back at 100 hours and buy a quart of fluid and filter. So, thats what I did. This sounds like a linkage problem.

My 2180 doesn't go fast backwards either, but if I push the reverse pedal down hard, it will go faster. There is a lip that runs along the outside of the rubber pad, I think my boot would rest on that, limiting how far down I was pressing the reverse pedal.

I do sometimes have to tap the reverse pedal to get the go pedal to stop forward progress, not always, but sometimes.

When new, my 2542 had the pedal creep issue.
I found a hairpin clip that was hanging up on the underside of the step under the pedals. I flipped the clip over and haven't had a problem since. If I remember right, I had to take a couple bolts out to get the clip out.
Yours might not be the same, but it's worth a look.
