I was filling our bird feeders this afternoon - - they are the 'squirrel proof' ones where the ledge is spring loaded so that anything heavier than a bird will cause the ledge to drop down & make the food inaccessable. So I take one down & look in it to be sure it is empty, & there, staring back at me is a small rat snake. Only about 2' long. I wonder how he got in - - no I don't. But I do wonder how many birds he surprised? I don't usually kill rat snakes, but I figgured that if he knew this little trick, he woud try it again later - - so I sent him off to creepy-crawly heaven.
Speaking of our legless friends, I had not seen a single snake this year till yesterday when I saw a copperhead in the pasture as I was walking across it. I hustled back to the barn for a hoe, but could not find him when I came back.
So, two snakes in two days, one lived - the wrong one. One died - the wrong one.
Hope I have better luck tomorrow.
