I had to drop the front carrier to replace the seal. On reassembly, the tapered bearing appears to not be going square on the lower portion of the housing. This prohibits me from getting the two halves together.

When I try to drop it again, the bearing locks in place, pulling the new seal out.

What's the trick? I came apart relatively easy.

Thanks,

Eric

No tricks. Get the bearing cone seated properly in the cup. Install the seal and raise the loaded swivel housing to the upper housing. Be aware that 'straight up' won't align the bearing and its inner support on the upper housing. There is a camber angle that has to be accounted for.

Disregard! Removed entire housing from end of axle casing and put it in the press. Straight push made it nearly drop into place.

Thanks!

Well, you got it done. Having done this repair dozens of times on various NH CUT models of identical design, the thought of a rookie using a press sends chills down my spine. I've never not done them in place. Glad you got it finished however it happened.

Where is Benton?

Oh trust me, I was apprehensive, knowing it wasn't a press fit. I had no intention of putting any real force on it. I simply couldn't get the inner race to go square on the knuckle.

I'm getting ready to reassemble the other side now, we'll see how it goes.

I'm not a noob to mechanics, just to this particular job.

Benton is just outside Waterville. Looks like I'll be passing relatively close to you Friday, I'm in Williston, VT tomorrow, then move to Syracuse Wednesday and Thursday, then Thruway Friday to get home.

I'm about 35 minutes south of I 90 (Berkshire Spur). We have vacationed in Maine the last 10 years or so. We usually stay in Portland a couple days, then do Midcoast or Greenville the rest of the week. Took in the balloon fest in Lewiston one year, it was a blast!

If you don't like the Mass Pike and 495, we sometimes take I 93 to Brattleboro then 202 and 111 across and come out in Biddeford. There are probably other ways to go, but this is a pleasant drive.

When you go to Greenville up 95, you pass within 300 yards of me.

I'll run across to Fort Drum from VT. If I have time, I'll jump on 7 in Troy and shoot across to 111. It takes about an hour longer, but is more entertaining than 90 and 495 in MA.

I'm about 35 minutes south of I 90 (Berkshire Spur).

That means you're probably only 20ish minutes from me. Neat. :)

Once in a while I used to take the scenic rt over to Vt through Skowhegan to Gorham, across NH over to VT, and then drop south. I like the country. Grew up in the southern Bershires.
Re Benton, my son lived in So. China for a few years- teaches at Waterville Sr. High. Beautiful area!
