Looking to build a gun range. What is planed so far,two phone polls with r/r ties stacked behind them. Behind those we will put truck tires filled with sand(to keep sand from washing out ) then a small dirt pile. Any good ideas on improvements, and ideas on a inclosed place to shoot from. Thought about a small shack on a trailer so that you could change the distance to the target.

If you decide to go with the trailer idea you will need an outrigger on the corners and possibly a substantial pad for each.

I remember someone posting a link to a pretty detailed guide to building a range. It was very impressive to me.

I tried to narrow it down using the search feature here, but couldn't pick it out of the other threads on gun ranges for you. Maybe someone else can point you to it or you may have more patience to pick through the other threads than me.

Sounds fine so far why not just build bench's at the different distances that's how most ranges are built with a covered area at the furthest range to keep your stuff etc and longer range shooting?

Here is the Document from Department of Energy from this thread.

What is wrong with just piling dirt up behind the RR ties???

It certainly has to be easier than tires and sand:confused2:

And if you dont build it up too high, it could also double as a loading dock for loading things like mowers and atv's into your truck:thumbsup:

I can't build permonent benches because the field it will be located in is bailed every year. We also would like a enclosed space to shoot from so we don't have to pick through the grass for the brass. The ground around hear is very flat and we want the back stop to be as tall as posable. The tires seem to be a good idea to keep the soil from washing away. Besides we change our own tires(my father and I ) and have a large stock pile of them that we would have to pay to get rid of. Just as easy to use for this. Out rigers on the trailer is a good idea

P.S. spell check won't work?????

You may want to consider laying a poly liner underneath and on top of the target to contain the lead and prevent it from leaching into the ground water. Some gun ranges have been the target of the EPA.
