Last car we had, a 1983 diesel, could be started in gear. Nowadays, there are so many protections that it's almost impossible to start them in gear.

VW even is installing a "misfueling" adaptor inside the diesel fuel door to keep people from putting gasoline in them. I'll have to look my daughter's 2013 Jetta TDI, which has this thing in place to figure out how it works. We've had diesel cars for 35 years and never "misfueled" one.
