I have a large garden (450'x100') and you may recognize I post a new question almost every other day under docrocky. I have a literal army of tillers to include walk behinds ranging from 16", 24" as well as garden tractor tiller attachments to 36" wide. I also have 2 row cultivators, Allis-Chalmers G as well as a Farmall super C (both are single row cultivators). I pretty much have the weed control in the rows. Now my question is aside from hoe- ing between the plants with the standard hoe which I can do but the back and shoulders are getting pretty worn. I also use the tilled soil to just smother the weeds between the plants but i have not see how effective this is ultimately especial with grass. I would feel better power hoeing them out, especially as close to the vegetable plants as possible without damage to them.
I do have a Mantis hand held 2 cycle tiller (which is a total joy to have and own) but is is a bit aggressive when working close to the plants. I saw the Black and Decker Cordless cultivator GC 818 which has the tiller splines coming down in a circle from the top. I am not interested in a cordless or battery operated unit. I have searched to see if anyone has a gas powered unit which has the same configuration but have not found one. I was wondering if anyone has ever attempted to take a regular 2 cycle weed wacker and remove the cords and replace it with a few downward oriented spikes act as the weed remover? Is my description adequate? I have tried to include an image of the B&D to illustrate what I am envisioning.
