Anybody ever hang a roof off an almost vertical slope.
Thinking of trying to build a shelter for implements/lumber
off an almost 90% DG slope on my property. I was thinking that if I can shoot some holes into the slope, I can do a partial pole building for the rest of the frame.
The DG is hard as concrete when dry, but is pretty easy to dig when wet.
Thanks for any advice/laughter

I have a cousin that has a lean-to against a vertical rock wall... he said parts of it have been there since the 1800's...

The rock face is only a little higher than the roof... so no danger of anything crashing through...

Lots of post and pier foundations out in California on slopes. There are some articles on this in the Foundations and Masonary book that Taunton Press put out--even a picture of some guys digging holes for piers with an auger mounted on a jeep.

I don't know what a 90% DG slope is, so my idea may be worthless.
What about line boring? They go under roads, etc for pipes and culverts. Basically boring horizontal, or some 'shoot' through. If you bored horizontally into the side of the slope 6' to 8' maybe and then slide a series of precast concrete post into the holes to serve as an anchor point for that side of the building. Cast a j-bolt into the outer end to anchor wood framing to the concrete.

A rock face can make a great lean to -- drill and rock bolt (used in mining to hold up loose ceilings)the roof to the face at the back. If it is not rock, lay PT 6x6 in the dirt from where the roof will start ,anchored in with rebar driven through or pipe, then build out from that -- JMHO:eek:

Whene you say when its wet, its easy to dig, is it the washout kind of mud or slippery kind or what ? I am also thinking that 90 degrees bored holes is NOT a good idea. I am thinking you should bore at slightly down angle. This way it acts as a achor point and if anything is on the roof (i.e. more mud, dirt rocks) the slightly bored down concrete would act like a hook and dig harder and deeper into the hillside to resist movement. On the plus side, the concrete you pour in there would have a place to go by gravity.

what about using some type of soil stablizer once the holes are put in, there are spray on polmer type products.

Can't really answer the question with the details available.

It'll all depend on the stability of the slope which may include a lot of outside factors. :D

Thanks for all the great ideas,
I'll try and take some pics(worth a 1000 words etc.)
What I was thinking was just sneak some 2 inch pipe into
the slope, all I need is to hold up some plastic or metal
covering, maybe 12 ft long. Don't have to worry about any
snow load here in sunny socal. Just enough to keep whatever
rain, and more inportantly the sun off my stuff.
