Family really surprised me this year; beautiful rifle:

Model 70 Classic, Laminated WSM

in .270 WSM.

Now, what scope would go with it for woods in Virginia? I was going to check out Nikons at Dick's. Anybody has a preferred scope brand? I think $100 - $200 is about my budget.

Nice rifle! Now, about that budget... Although I understand it completely, it is low... Good glass cost money. It is very easy to put as much or more, into glass, as in to a rifle.

Nikon makes good glass; great reputation in microscopes, cameras etc. Leupold makes nice glass.

For a woods gun, think smaller and lower power. A nice 1.5-4x scope would be perfect. Small, lite, with a range perfect for a 75-150 woods shot. A 3-9 or 4-12x scope is great in open country, but you don't need more than 2-4 x in the woods. The scope would be more compact, and easier to handle when you're scrambling through the trees and brush.

I want to replace the 3-9x40 on my Savage 99 lever rifle. A 1.5-4x would be a perfect compliment to the .300 Savage cartridge.

Leupold has a Vari-x II 1-4x. Cabela's wants $299... They have a 1.75-6x Vari-X III but it is more. They do have a Nikon 2-7 for only $129; wonder about that at such a low price though...

Thank you, guys and thanks for the info, finding the right scope and fitting it on a rifle is fun too, isn't it?:D
I have Nikon 4x40 on my SMLE, I think I will put it on just to start somewhere and take it to the range; my trigger finger itches too much for the new rifle:)

If you could up your ante just a little on the choice of scope, I would recommend the Leupold "Rifleman". It's the entry level scope in the Leupold family and is a very versatile and well built scope.

I have one on my 30.06, so I know it will take the recoil of your .270. You can find them online for 225.00 (shipping included). Just google around.

You'll never go wrong with Leupold.

I had a Nikon Monarch on my 30.06 originally. I had problems with it and sold it on ebay (as-is). I explained on the listing that it wouldn't hold zero. I never bought another one, although I'm sure my bad luck with one doesn't represent the entire brand.

Good luck, nice rifle. Take care and happy birthday!
