What ever happened to the old days of 10, 20, & 30 weight non detergent oil? Back then, it came in a glass jar at the filling station island. You didn't need to be a chemist to know what oil to put into your car. If it was summer and 100 degrees, you used the 30 weight. 10 weight for the winter, and the spring and fall you used either the 20 or 30 depending on if it was a warmer or colder season. Didn't have to deal with oil filters, because cars didn't have them. What do you need an oil filter for, when the oil didn't last that long anyway. You either burned it past the rings, or changed it every 1000/1500 miles. Back then, that was 6 months of driving. Tires lasted about 2500 miles and cars cost under 1000 dollars. Not many people bought new ones, except for the very wealth. You home cost you a few thousand dollars, if that, and had a 20 year mortgage at 1%. Your children got married and then had children, not the other way around. No one left the table before the meal was finished, and men always removed their hats when entering a building, or upon meeting a lady. Your wife stayed home to raise the children and cook you a hot meal. Some men even came home for both lunch and supper. It was called diner back then for those that can remember. Washing machines were something you only saw on the pages of the Sears Roebuck company, and diswashers hadn't even been invented yet. Many people didn't have electricity, and gas lights were common. If you had a telephone, you were very wealthy and shared the line with 6 or more other families. The date was November 11, 1918. The First World War had just ended.
Yes, we have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, but please stop for a moment to remember those brave men that came before us that helped this great country to become what it is today, and to keep us free, that didn't come home to see all the wonderful things that I have just described. Bless the men and women of our Armed Forces that protect us today, both young and old alike. Without them, there would be no Happy Thanksgiving.

Dusty,
That was a great piece of history... thanks for sharing! :)
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family also.

While we're on the subject of your story and World War I, most of you are aware we just celebrated Veterans Day in the United States two weeks ago.
Officially declared as Armistice Day by Congress in 1926, the day marked the anniversary of the end of the World War at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. The day was changed to Veterans Day in 1954, to honor all who have served.

Since the original day was to commemorate the end of World War I, I thought it would be appropriate to mention the fact that several World War I U.S. veterans are still living, all between the ages of 105 and 113. 2006 began with 24 living U.S. veterans from World War I, and now there are only 12 left.

Here is the article...
88 years after war’s end, veterans down to dogged dozen

Have a great Thanksgiving Dusty, and to everyone else here at Tractor By Net.
No matter who you are or what you have, take some time to be thankful for what you have, including your friends and family around you! :)

Make that 11.
Governor Jeb Bush visited Ernest Charles Pusey at his home the day before Veterans Day, and now less than two weeks later, Mr. Pusey has passed away at the age of 111.

A Thanksgiving salute to Mr. Pusey and our veterans who have given us the opportunity to sit down this day to be thankful for our freedom in this country.

It is nice that the Governor went to visit him before he died.

I was at a church in West Virginia last Sunday that was celebrating its anniversary, and they received a letter from President and Laura Bush congratulating them on the milestone. I thought that was real nice, but many times better was seeing Governor Bush visit a 111 year old veteran at his home, which was REALLY special...
Yep, that's one of those things that need to be done in person. :)

I had a great Thanksgiving with my kids and grandkids. Great country we live in and Im thankful for everything I have and hopefully life will be good for more generations to come. Be thankful to those serving so you can have your turkey dinner and freedom.I spent three thanksgivings away from home serving in the military 38 years ago and know life shouldn't be taken for granted. Have a nice Holiday Weekend...
