What ever happened to the old days of 10, 20, & 30 weight non detergent oil? Back then, it came in a glass jar at the filling station island. You didn't need to be a chemist to know what oil to put into your car. If it was summer and 100 degrees, you used the 30 weight. 10 weight for the winter, and the spring and fall you used either the 20 or 30 depending on if it was a warmer or colder season. Didn't have to deal with oil filters, because cars didn't have them. What do you need an oil filter for, when the oil didn't last that long anyway. You either burned it past the rings, or changed it every 1000/1500 miles. Back then, that was 6 months of driving. Tires lasted about 2500 miles and cars cost under 1000 dollars. Not many people bought new ones, except for the very wealth. You home cost you a few thousand dollars, if that, and had a 20 year mortgage at 1%. Your children got married and then had children, not the other way around. No one left the table before the meal was finished, and men always removed their hats when entering a building, or upon meeting a lady. Your wife stayed home to raise the children and cook you a hot meal. Some men even came home for both lunch and supper. It was called diner back then for those that can remember. Washing machines were something you only saw on the pages of the Sears Roebuck company, and diswashers hadn't even been invented yet. Many people didn't have electricity, and gas lights were common. If you had a telephone, you were very wealthy and shared the line with 6 or more other families. The date was November 11, 1918. The First World War had just ended.
Yes, we have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, but please stop for a moment to remember those brave men that came before us that helped this great country to become what it is today, and to keep us free, that didn't come home to see all the wonderful things that I have just described. Bless the men and women of our Armed Forces that protect us today, both young and old alike. Without them, there would be no Happy Thanksgiving.
