The newest Harbor Freight Tool catalogue has a 4 ton electric log splitter. It cuts up to 14 1/2 inch logs, with up to 12" diameter. It has a 2 hp motor. Its hydraulic, and looks like a smaller gas operated log splitter. It's only $269.99.

This is an awful lot cheaper than a gas operated or pto operated log splitter. I'm seriously thinking of getting one. I only split wood occaisionally, when we have downed trees on our 2 acre wood lot, or when we find out about someone with downed trees, who don't burn wood for heat.

Does anyone have any experience or ideas about this unit?

I'm thinking that with only 4 tons of pressure, it won't split any logs that a splitting maul won't also handle (cost < $30). And a 14.5" log is pretty short.

No experience with the unit. I did notice that DR is selling an electric splitter as well.

The keywords here are "up to", 4 ton is pretty low. That 14 1/2 x 12 would probably need to be very dry(cracking).

It might be ok for smaller stuff and very occasional use.

It ain't that much cheaper than the 3 point hitch one

Northern Horizontal Log splitter $429.99

If you have a rear remote on you oliver, all you need to add is a couple of hoses. Or you can tap into your FEL hydraulics. TSC has a similar model as well.

Like a previous poster said, It isn't going to split anything that a maul won't.

This is one of those cases where you will have regretted not spending the extra $200 up front.

I seen the little splitter in the catalogue I thought it was a joke at first then figured they was really serious about the whole thing might work ok in pine

I can vouch for the TSC 3ph model. Something like $550 or so. The frame is identical to the briggs powered models setting next to it, they are a 26 ton model (I think). Of course the 3ph model tonnage varies with the hydraulic capability of the tractor. My dad bought one. It goes on a David Brown 990, 56 hp. Just idling the engine we had more power than we ever needed, and the cycle time was fine. It flips vertical or horizontal. Relative to some homemade splitters I have seen, the rated 26 ton model seemed kinda small in the steel. I think the 4 ton electric job would be wanting for some grunt.

I figured it was too small to be much good. I probably will get the TSC 3ph splitter, and tap it into the hydraulics for my loader on my Oliver. But the price was so cheap on the electric one, I figured I'd see if anyone had one. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
