( Do they have the same prices as the web site or mail catalog, and will they sell you the product for less if it is on the net or catalog and you can prove it? Saddle up the Buick, and bring the catalogs from your "reading room" /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif or else the web page printouts and they will match those prices. You can really save some money that way. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Moeh1, Where's the harbor freight store in upstate NY?

I think Harbor Freight tools are a very good value especially when they are on sale for up to half off at their local stores. If you are patient they will usually put what you are looking for on sale. The mail order prices are usually higher than the in store sale prices to cover the cost of the “free” shipping. Sign up to get on their mailing list at the store and then you can see what’s on sale from home.

I have had my HF ½” air impact for over 20 years and it works great. I am sure these tools would likely not hold up as long as the more expensive brands for industrial use, but for occasional home or farm use they will last a very long time.

You really ought to get an air compressor though. It’s one of those things that after you have one for a while you wonder how you ever got along without it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

OK, I need to clarify something for those not experienced with Harbor Freight.

****HARBOR FREIGHT AIN'T CHEAP!!!****

I go there (too) often. Price is 50% of Sears/others. So, I end up spending 3 times as much. That's 3 X 50% = 150%. Conclusion: HF is 50% more expensive than Sears. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Got a 450 ft lb pneumatic wrench there 4 months ago 'cause it was on sale (you guessed it....50% less than Sears). 4 months later and it's only been out of the box once...plugged it in to the air hose on day 1 to be sure it would spin. Yep. It spins. Added a couple drops of oil, put it back in the box, and sat it on a shelf where it has been ever since. But, come next flat tire I'm ready!

Guess where I'm going shopping tomorrow morning? I'm sure there's another tool on sale that I have just gotta have!

Tom,
dangerous roadtrip /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Better decide on a budget ahead of time. I spent a fortune first and second time there, but it was well worth it. Actually being there in person is very worthwhile. As KubotaSteve said, not everything they offer is the quality you might want. Seeing it in front of you allows you to decide. I passed on a few things, but I also bought a bunch of stuff that I would have been leery of buying sight unseen. They will match any current catalog price as long as you bring the catalog with you! They put alot of stuff on sale at the store every couple weeks, so I tend not to buy stuff retail anymore, I wait for them to put it on sale in the catalog, or the store. Happy shopping. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

John,
depends on which part of "upstate" you are in. I am in Rochester, there is one there, for sure another near Lockport/Buffalo area that my nephew told me about, both opened last summer. Seems like they are expanding - if these aren't close enough, check their website.

Marty,

Made the trip to the Harbor Freight store today. WOW you can spend some serious $$ if you do not watch what you put in your shopping cart /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif. I did pick up the impact wrench and a few other things, not too bad spent $136 /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Got some things on sale, cheaper then the internet and catalog which was great. Did pass on some stuff, nice to look at it in person then just reading about it. Filled out the card so they will send future sale info I hope. Well worth the trip /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Will have to make it a scheduled trip a few times a year I am sure.

Tom - don't say I didn't warn you about that place! It's 150% more expensive than Sears if you don't leave your CC and Chk. book at home.
Just saw that you are a lover of fire prevention...
If I want to install an integrated fire alarm system in my house when the boss decides to redecorate in a year or so, what would you recommend? Should I just call up a reputable alarm company and see what they recommend (I do not currently have a burgular alarm system either)? Probably just get a combo fire/burgular system? What is the recommendation of the insurance industry? Do insurance folks lean toward any particular vendor?

Have a good one,
roger

Roger,

I do not work on the residential homes side of the business, we have a separate department that handles it. I work on the commercial side, inspecting manufactures, warehouses, hospitals, high rise buildings, etc. But some general comments, make sure the alarm is monitored off site to a central station, all areas of the house should have a fire detection device installed including garages if attached and basement if you have one, also include a CO detector if you use gas, oil, wood, to heat. Check with your agent/insurance carrier and see what they suggest before you install. I would not go by what the alarm salesman says. I know our company will send someone out to review your home and make recommendations. But our target market is the $1 million plus homes. Sorry I could not be help to u. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
