My little YM2700 is having a hard time cranking up after letting it sit for a week. I typically only use it on the weekends, and lately it is becoming very hard to start. It does not use any oil, does not smoke, has good compression and is in very good condition. I have fresh diesel in it (Off road #2) and after it is running is very stong and does not run hot.
I have to crank and crank with the throttle wide open and when it finally starts, it pumps out a ton of black smoke. If I shoot a little gas in the air cleaner to help it along, it cranks up right away, but I know in the long run this is detrimental to the engine. Any suggestions as to what might be the cause? My neighbor says my injector pump is going out.. What say the group?

If it will start up the next day with no problem, but wont start after setting for a week, my guess would be air in the fuel lines. Next time it wont start, try bleeding it and see if that makes it start up.

Can we assume you have replaced air and fuel filters, and assured exhaust is not plugged?

Yes, to the question, does it start ok the next day,, starts right up.

Fuel filter and air element are clean.

I just bought a diesel compression checker from Harbor Freight and will check it out this weekend.

thanks for the replies.. ron

Adding Power Service (diesel fuel additive) might give you the same result as the gas you are spraying in, while being kinder to the engine. The stuff improves a batch of bad fuel dramatically.

It could be a weak battery. Next time it sits for a week, try jumping the battery from another that you know is good. Firing right up when using a starting aid (gasoline) makes me think it just is not turning over fast enough to fire by itself. Do you have a decompression leaver? Are you using it as part of your starting procedures?

The black smoke on start up indicates the injectors and fuel pump are working normally.

California, I was looking at the pictures of your YM240. What size tires are on the rear? I know they are bigger then what came on it?? I would like to put a bigger/wider tire on my YM2001.

Thanks

They are 12.4 x 24 tires, on the correct 11 x 24 rims specified for that tire size.

The tires/rims were presumably new Kubota take-offs, judging by their near-new condition when I bought the tractor in 2003. The rims bolted right up to the original US-Yanmar discs (wheel centers).

They hold a lot of water ballast. I think the Firestone table says 250 lbs per side filled to max. (up to the valve stem at 12:00 position.) I tried that, but noted the weight made the tractor slow getting started up the grades that are all over this orchard, so after I added the ROPS I reduced the water level to 50%. This still feels stable on a side slope. (partly due to the added width those rims provide).

I nearly always have an implement on the 3-point to offset the weight of the loader and provide adequate traction. I would go back up to maximum water fill in the tires for best ground traction if I used the tractor where I needed maximum pull, for discing etc, and the weight of the pulled implement didn't give any ballast effect.

Ok, got it fixed!!!!!!! First of all, this model does have glow plugs. Then found out that the wire to the glow plugs was burned up as was the relay. So I replaced it with a momentary starter switch I got at the parts place, wired it up to the battery and glow plugs and now hold the switch for 5 secs and it starts up right away...thanks for the help on trying to figure this one out.
