I need a trencher for a week. I can buy one for around 2K for a bobcat (same specs) and just weld on a plate. But thinking about renting instead. It would open me up to a few other occasional use items....

Thoughs?

I have been thinking the same thing actually...some attachments I don't think I need in inventory and could be rented when the situation comes around.

So here's my view on renting implements.... a non-powered implement, or a mechanically powered implement like a (god forbid) 3pt implement, I would have no problem with. But a hydraulically powered implement.... I'd have some concerns.

Besides the fitting issue that will have to be overcome, there's the compatibility of the hydraulic fluid that is already in the implement, who's other machine has it been in, what's in it, etc....

I remember having an IH and a JD tractor on the farm when I was a kid and those two were exchanging bodily fluids all the time. Funny thing is neither of them caught anything.

Here's another fact that will keep you up at night. You know that 12 foot hose on the gas station pump that sells all 3 grades from one dispenser? The hose is full of whatever grade of fuel the guy in front of you bought so when you fill 'er up with premium, you are getting a hose load of el cheapo that is cross contaminating your purchase!

I usually try to buy no ethanol gas from stations that use a dedicated hose.

The incompatibility issue is interesting. I bought a new hydraulic pump and drained some oil from the pump into a clear glass bottle. I then added motor oil. The two did not mix at first. I shook the bottle vigorously and set it aside. Even days later, it was not possible to delineate between the too liquids as they seemed to mix completely. I was told by a hydraulics expert this was the best "poor man's" test to determine compatibility.

I recently built a "filter cart" with a 3 micron filter that works perfectly. I can filter from the PTO or wheel motor circuit. It has four check values to ensure the oil always flow the correct direction through the filter, regardless which end is connected to which hose. I included a flow value and two pressure values (so I could tell when the filter was full). I should have built one years ago.
