Has your heating bills been real high this winter so far? Mine last month was outrages because my empty house was 100.00 for just a heat pump working and set at 50 degrees.

Terry.

When I had electricity, yes.... now.... no. I have downsized considerably. But the price to keep warm was doubled this winter.

Sigh....

News story the other day about natural gas prices dropping like a rock and electric rates staying high. Imagine that. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

We have friends that have an all electric house. We have gas heat, dryer, oven and water heater. This is the first year that their electric bill is less than our electric+gas bill combined.

We heat and cool our small, 1,000 sq ft house from electricity only. During the warm weather when the AC was on all the time, our bill was just under $200 a month.

When it cooled off outside, we turned on the heater to around 70 degrees. Our bill went up to $300, then the next month is was $340.

I called the power company to see why it went up so much because we had cut back after the previous month. The said they raised their rates.

Steph thought it would be cheaper to use the ceramic space heaters that we already had and just heat the room we're in, when we're in them.

Our last bill was $202.

It looks like natural gas futures are down about 30% from their high in December and back to where they were last September. They are saying that this is in part due to mild winter temperatures and a correction in price comparing oil and natural gas. Some large industrial users can switch between gas and oil. The gas was getting more expensive than oil so they started using more oil causing gas prices to fall as much as 10% last week alone.

This is great news for us end users. I was getting pretty worried. This spring the gas company is running a line 1 ½ miles to my poultry farm. We are expanding so they will finally be able to justify the cost. Natural gas has been so much cleaper than propane in Oregon. If I adjust the price of propane to account that it has less btu’s than a therm our commercial propane price would be 1.42 vs .94 for natural gas. The conversion will be a huge benefit to our operation.

Hang in there we only have a couple more months a cold weather and high bills. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

We were prepared for the worst. Natural gas prices were climbing out of sight and Dick Goddard said it was going to be a rough, cold winter, brrrrr. Turns out this winter wasn't so bad after all and since supply was more than demand prices on natural gas started coming back down. At least around these parts, anyway.

I'm not complaining either. Sometimes it's real nice to have a pleasant surprise.

Well Terry,
I think you will be hard pressed to find anyone in the country that has there bills going down /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

At my Ct house, I have the woodstove in the basement, and burn about 4 cords to offset the heating costs. No cost on that other than my time. Upstairs in the familyroom I have a propane gas insert enclosed with blower. We used maybe 100 gals with that this winter at $2.25 per gal. And the rest of the house is electric heat /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif and the last two bills were killers, this past month was $293. The house is 2000 sq ft approx, 3 bdrm saltbox colonial.
Vt house we use a propane gas stove and will burn about 300 gals over the winter, but propane up there is $3.00 /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

We heat with gas. This winter I converted my shop heater from fuel oil to gas. Also added a standby natural gas generator that cycles for 20 minutes each week. We have cut back on how warm we keep some of the rooms in the house. Usage has dropped but bills keep going up.
Our gas company has a site where you can see your usage for the last 3 years. Here is a copy of how we have reduced our bill but the amount has gone up. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I replaced our furnace a couple of years ago, and we saw a dramatic reduction the first winter after that, but since then, rising prices for gas have offset the improvement in efficiency such that our bills are now a little higher than they were. But what would they have been if I didn't replace that furnace?????????

Overall, our highest has been about $275, but with the warmer winter, it won't be too bad this year.

Can't wait to get our new house built............
