I use my compact tractor for weekend side work, mowing, grading etc. and have been charging an hourly rate which has up to now worked fine but with the "sky-rocketing" fuel prices, I may have to start charging for "haul-in".

My question is; what is or how would I figure a "fair" haul-in price?

I don't know what people do today, but it used to be around here they would charge a one way hauling, from the location where the equipment was to where it was going to be used.

The next place it went would be charged to the next customer, the same way.

I suppose sometimes "adjustments" were made, but basically it was charged at the normal hourly operating rate, from what I remember...

It will be interesting to hear what people are doing these days... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My friend has a full size TLB. First hour is $125. After that, is $55 per hr. That pretty well covers haul in.

Another local has a two hr minimum @$45 per hr.

Adjusted accordingly it works pretty well, cuts down on the low profit jobs.

Going rate for Skidsteer work around here is $65/hr, 3hr min.

I only use my little Kubota locally. I charge a 3hr-min. If it is less than 3 hours, than I cover my load/unload and transport time. If it is over 3 hours, then I it is just part of the job; the time covers it.

I have heard some folks charge a flat hour just for drop-off and setup.

As long as I've been in buisness the clock started when the equip left the yard and stopped when it returned to the yard at the going rate of the equip being used. Wear & tear on the truck and trailer etc can't be given away. We had a saying that we "don't need to do a job for practice" meaning we get paid the right amount or don't do it at all. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

For most of what I've done, I've charged double the hourly price for the first hour to cover hauling. If I had to go very far, I'd increase it. So far, I'm not doing that much commercial though and have been able to drive to many of the ones I have done. John

Simply add a separate hauling fee to the bill. Keeps from confusing you and the customer. For us, within a 15 mile radius is equal to a minimum of one hours time. Quite a few people pay more than that to get "stuff" delivered to their house and wait 4-6 hours for the privilege!

I charge the same hourly rate while at home loading the eguipment and while driving to the job. In most cases thats about 1 1/2 hrs or $90. Dont work for free.

Not just fuel cost, but the higher (by the day) cost of insurance, license, truck replacement, trailer, (and vehicle tires) plus the ever increasing liability of operating on someone elses property. All but the liability issue falls mainly on "moving" from one job to the next. I include my moving cost in my hourly rate. (Higher for first 2 hours on the job) But this year, I'll be charging $1 a mile, for any travel OVER 25 miles from the shop. (both ways) I suggest to any potential customers that balk on my pricing, that they find someone closer or cheaper if they aren't happy. In most cases, they can't do either. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I enjoy my work, but I see no need to give it away. If I can't make money while working for someone else, I'll stay home and watch Andy Griffith re-runs... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I'm finding also, that several of my customers that in prior years had me to bush hog properties 3 or 4 times a year, are now planning on mowing once or twice a season. (Because of cost increase) /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

When I hired in dozer work he charged one hour for loading / unloading. It was $65 per hour. It took him 9 hours to do the job but I was charged for 10. Seems nice and simple that way. I think that beats the 2 or 3 hour minimums; but I'm looking at it from the customers point of view.
