Class 6 or 7 day cab single axle will work for your intended use.

I would go with the class 7 though to get engine brakes instead of exhaust brakes.

Air brakes on the trailer would be very nice and safer.

Good points mentioned by everyone and I appologize for the lack of information. I knew what I was talking about...why didn't you:)

I will be pulling a 32' gooseneck trailer loaded with two skid steer loaders, two cutterheads, a root rake, fuel, tools, etc. My best guestimations put the GCVW around 39,000 lbs. - allowing for a 9,000 lb. haul truck. As I previously mentioned, I would normally haul around 27,000 lbs. with the occasional load of 39,000 lbs.

If I can't afford the proper truck then I'll be forced to take two truck/trailer combinations.

I've been around the block a few times with this situation. If you don't need to carry anything in the "bed" of the truck (purely a road tractor) then I'd suggest a used beverage tractor type of truck, like a former Pepsi truck. Then buy yourself a nice lowboy trailer for your equipment.

You can buy a solid road tractor for almost nothing and depending on the drivetrain choice, it will run longer than a smaller chassis. Plus it'll never be overworked in your application. Look for an IH4700 or 4900 with a DT466 or DT530 and airbrakes and you'll be set. Another good choice is an 8.3L Cummins.

I had another thought for you overnight (see, always thinking about you guys )

A single axle dump truck, 33,000gvw with a 20ton + tag trailer. You can get tag trailers in up to 30+ feet long, 20 to 40 tons capacity.

If you are transporting skid steers, you might find a use for the small dump. You could also put a plow on the dump in the winter.

Lots of ex-municipal single axle dumps around with very few miles (and very little work, draw your own conclusion) and somtimes with plow mounts already. Probably 30k for the dump and another 20k for the trailer. (guessing here, might be more or less). Tag trailers are pretty cheap.

air brakes.

That's what I did, but I have use for a dump. I was under the impression the O/P didn't need a dump, just a tractor.

just stay away from a FL-80 with a 330 crummin's. we've got a 99 fl-80 pumper, with a 330 cummin's. the motor has been a lemon, and the rest of the truck isn't much better...... shame to say that about a $300,000.00 truck
