Hauling firewood on a landscape utility trailer

Dutch Elm disease, Emerald Ash Borer, Beach Bark fungus, Oak Wilt has killed/is killing trees in our neighborhood and Woolly Alegid is about 6 miles away killing our Hemlock. We live in a cottage community, so lots of firewood from all over being brought in. Have to ponder that some of this was transported here via infected wood. We now have association rules that require members to follow state guidelines about firewood not crossing county lines. We cut and leave all wood on road side for first come first serve to keep outside wood from coming in.

We aren't supposed to transport over 50 miles, but people do it anyways. Until this year we were in a non quarantine area for the ash borer while NH was. Yet it wasn't uncommon to see people coming up through with a load of firewood, and I know of at least one case where they were caught with borer infested wood.

Dutch Elm Disease is caused by a fungus called Ophiostoma ulmi that was introduced to the U.S. in the early 1930s

The Emerald Ash Borer invader is from northern China and Korea. It can also be found in eastern Russia, Japan, and Mongolia.

Beech Bark Fungus scale was accidentally introduced into Nova Scotia in 1890 on ornamental beech imported from Europe.

Oak Wilt origin of the fungus is unknown.

3 out of 4 of these do not come from transporting firewood 70 miles. Many of these diseases are a losing cause unfortunately.

Global transport and travel is the problem.

Firewood transportation is not the problem, just a kneejerk reaction.
