Building an addition to my shed, for tractor & other equipment. Running out of room....actually, ran out last year....and tractor's been outside for months.

Decided to put in an 18 foot 8-18 S-section i-beam up high, running nearly full length of new shed. Purpose, to hang my electric hoist & winch from trolleys hanging from i-beam, so I can roll the hoist & winch independently to any location along the center-line of the shed.

Steel company had to drop off the i-beam way down hill from the shed site, for reasons apparent when you see the attached pic's......so, what better way to haul the i-beam up the hill than with the BX25.

Pic's of shed show beam winched up in intermediate temp location.....not fully hoisted to peak yet. Started to rain yesterday during the lift, so will resume final 3 feet of lift tomorrow. Building the shed with lots of extra construction, from foundation up, to hold beam plus up to 2,000 lbs load. More bracing to go in before completion and before lifting any load.

Should all be finished in couple of weeks. Putting in 220 service, etc. Planning for everything done right, hopefully, after years of overcrowded under-equipped shed, tripping over everything, and having to move 3 things to get to something. No more. Just got bxpanded dollys for both implements, etc, so no more off-loading implements on uneven ground outside.

Those truss plates look like something out of a viking castle. It looks like the floor is OSB sheathing, what will you be lifting with that sized beam that won't overload the floor? Or is that just protecting the slab while you work? I assume there will be steel support columns on each end of the beam. Interesting project, I admire your grit. I also identify with the tripping over everything and moving 3 times to get at what you want.

BeezFun.....Floor is permanent & not temp protection over slab. The sheeting is the floor, sitting on a lot of framework, which in turn is sitting on concrete & blocks.

Didn't actually need an i-beam of that size & weight (aside from length)...an i-beam of this size could easily suspend a lot more weight than I intend to lift.....but I wanted to hang my hoists etc from rolling trolleys, and I felt that I needed a beam with 4" flange minimum for the trolleys & beam clamps. I would have been OK with something like 5-10 S i-beam, but flanges would have been only 3" or so, and I felt that was just too marginal for secure fitting trolleys that would have no chance of coming off the flange.....so I got a 4" flange beam and the other dimensions (lbs/ft, web height) were pretty much what came with that size S flange beam.

No supporting steelwork. Beam will be suspended. It's not like I'm going to lift the tractor!

I'm not the builder, by the way.....way out of my league. I did the excavation, rigging/lifting beam, and some other minor tasks...but other than specifying what I wanted, the rest is construction pro job.

I see, makes sense.

I missed the fact that the bottom truss chord on each end is a very deep beam. I thought it was just temporarily sitting on that. Interesting truss design to allow for the height of the steel beam, never saw anything like that. You should put this over on the projects forum, pretty interesting so I think a lot of people would enjoy seeing it.
