farmall
Hi. My husband and I need advice on purchasing a new field tractor--- primarily for mowing our 15 + acre field. ( field a little rocky in places, but otherwise flat) We presently have an old Farmall with Bush hog that is no longer functioning. Need advice on NEW up to date tractors that are appropriate for our needs. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Ang

welcome to the forums!

a model number of farmall might help other folks. TractorData.com - information on all makes and models of tractors is a good place to figure out what you might have. tractor pictures with spec's.

width of current cutter.

are you only cutting down tall weeds 1, 2,3 times a year?
or are you cutting 12 plus times a year, and trying to obtain a finishing mower cut. (yard around your home but maybe a little rougher)?

rotatory cutter = (laymen terms, bush hog), (bush hog = brand name)

=============
is there any other work tractor might see? snow? garden work? field work if so what type? dealing with dirt/gravel driveway? etc...?

============
above just trying to ID tasks that might require more or less engine HP and PTO HP, traction, type of rotatory cutter, if a heavier tractor might be wanted, etc...

we rethinking of buying a new tractor.we have 20acres that is in conservancy that we will likely put some cattle on.
the tractor would be mainly for cutting the second field usually monthly May through September. we would alsobe doing some snow removal in the winter
likely transport some hay to the second field for the cattle and lastly the occas hay ride for the grandkids.
thanks
Dave

Any good CUT around 40hp should be fine. You will get a lot of different opinions here but check several tractors out by driving them before deciding to purchase one to see what you like. You might consider a cab for winter and nice in the summer also. With most manufactures now running their 0% for 5 years financing, it helps with the decision sometimes.

anything pretty much will work for ya, for the rototary cutter.... but as soon as you said cattle... that is when things start going up.

are you bailing hay? cutting hay? why type of bails ? square / round bails? size of bails?

are you just using 3pt hitch rear blade / FEL (front end loader) for snow removal? or wanting a snow blower? or plow? how long is the driveway / dirt/gravel road ways on property?

the rotoatory cutter, you going to keep current one you have? or get something bigger? what is current size you have now? how wide of a cut in approx feet?

some info on current farmall tractor you have now... model number? are you wanting roughly same power it has? wanting more?

Most any tractor that is above 25HP and 2500lb should do the job for mowing. Bigger is better as hay can get heavy. A 4x4 40 hp hydro tractor with a loader and a 6 foot rotary mower would be about perfect but it might be out of your budget.

40 hp (engine), hydrostatic transmission, 4WD, power steering, dual rear hydraulic remotes (three is better), 3-point hitch Category 1. Add a front end loader (FEL) with 6-ft wide bucket, skid steer quick attach (SSQA) option, chain hooks welded on top of the bucket. Mower: 6-ft wide brush hog. On a level field, figure 2 acres per hour for normal height weeds (2-ft or so).

For comfort consider a cab option.

Good luck

Good luck

This is pretty much what I'd suggest, except that for clearing weeds and grass, a flail mower will be faster and give a better cut, plus let you go wider with the same amount of PTO power.

I'd add extending 3pt lift arms and stabilizers as a very handy feature as well.

As far as brands, Deere, Kubota, Mahindra, Massey Ferguson, LS, Kioti, TYM and Yanmar. I'd pass on New Holland and Case because most of them are LS machines that you can buy significantly cheaper from LS.

I would choose one that had close by dealer support. Around here, LS dealers are few and far between. So if I wanted one of their tractors, I would rather pay a little extra and go with a NH/Case dealership.

That's the problem....it won't be what most of us call "a little extra" at all. When I priced LS to the comparable Case and NH, it was $10K difference. I wound up buying an LS R4047H for $21,500. Both the closest NH dealer and CaseIH dealers were well over $30K for the same machine (Boomer 50 and Farmall 50B).

If you have a CNH Ag dealer near you, LS can authorize them to do warranty work if needed....just have to get approval first. If you need parts/filters/etc all you have to do is use the CNH part number and you're set. There really isn't any reason I can see that makes sense to spend nearly 50% more for the same basic machine (save some minor details like grill inserts and lights).
