john deere 318
hi everyone I just got this vintage john deere 140-H3 with a 14HP k321 kohler engine that I have to spray it with starter fluid in order to get it started and she'll start as long as its warm but once she cools I have to get the spray again ..I installed a new spark plug air & gas filter and I'm waiting for points and condenser to arrive ..would the points and condenser remedy my starting problem..??? johnny

No, that's a fuel problem. Take the carb apart, there is probably a buildup of varnish or crystalline deposit in the main jet or venturi, a common malady on small engines subjected to corn gas or periods of inactivity.
I just had to do this on my lawnmower the other day (Snapper cast aluminum with a Briggs), even with feeding it Seafoam in the fuel, it got where it was hard to start and wouldn't idle. Took it apart, cleaned it out and blew out the passages, starts right up and idles now.
Points and condenser won't hurt, it will make it start easier when it's damp, and just run better with clean electric contacts.

maybe the fuel pump isn't working properly. sometimes they are separate, and sometimes they are mounted on the carburetor. you generally need about 1/2 bowl of fuel for it to be picked up properly by the jets.

the fuel is gravity fed..the fuel tank hangs over the carb

I just got the tractor the gas tank hose is going directly into the carb if that isn't gravity fed then I don't know..I read that I could buy one for this engine if I wanted to ..with this engine you could feed the gas with a pump or just gravity.. the engine has the plate cover for where the pump go's but I don't see a need for it ..I disconnected the gas hose from the carb and gas was flowing out very good..thanks I appreciate your advice johnny
