Tractor folk:

I was going to post this in the lawn mower section but thought more folks would see it here. Was up at the guy's house I buy hay from last Sunday picking up a load and he was out back mowing when I drove in.....came driving up on a mower I have seen before but never realy looked at closely.

I asked him if it was diesel and he said no.....he opened the hood and I peeked inside.....sure looked like a diesel to me. A nice little Yanmar motor sitting in side and I said are you pulling my leg, he said I've been pooring gas in it all the time and it's been running like that for years.

Upon closer inspection, sure enuff it had spark pluge's right through the valve cover???????

Any one ever herd of Yanmar converting one of there blocks to gas, tractor was a 322 John Deere yard mower.

The 322 was the water-cooled gasoline/spark version of the 316/318/322/332 clan. I do believe it was a yanmar. Not real common, and from all accounts a great little tractor. The 316 and 318 used air-cooled Onan's and the 332 was a Yanmar diesel.

Correct! And believe it or not the gasoline yanmar in the 322 is a converted diesel, the block is very similar to the 332 diesel motor. My dad had a 322 and it was a very powerful and durable unit. Great power and reasonable economy for a large gas motor.

You are correct- It is a Yanmar GAS engine. I have one, liquid cooled, inline 3 cylinder, gas, 18hp if I remember right.

Tractor is essentially identical to the 316/318/332 models

Excellent tractor, excellent engine. Mine has about 500 hours on it, runs smooth as silk, super quiet and great power, never had anything go wrong. Tractor came with dual hydraulics installed at the front, hydraulic deck lift, power steering. I think it and the 332 were the first Garden tractors with power steering. Was available with a rear PTO and 3 pt, mine doesn't have either. I do have a 50 mower and front blade.
My only complaint is the hand hydro control. One hand on the hydraulic levers controlling the blade height/angle, one on the Hydro lever controlling speed / direction - How do you steer /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Now we know why Deere invented twin-touch foot controls.

I think Deere took a step backward in the 300 line after that series. They went to a single hydraulic circuit, and removed the split brakes from the offering. But Twin-touch is a nice feature.

Believe it or not, this is the only picture I can find that resembles my garden tractor.

I had a 322 Before buying my 4110 and it was one of the best deere`s that any of my family has owned. It is a three cylinder 18 hp gas. One thing that I noticed is at about 500 hrs. I reset the valve lash and it made a huge difference it was like adding a cylinder and the lash was only out of spec by 10 thousands. Great little tractor. I also agree about the new three series not being as good as the old ones, my neighbor just bought a new 345 and it looks fragile compared to the old 3 series.
