Hello all, I have a 4WD HST 1520 (1989), and am attempting to change the oil in the front axle differential and final reduction cases. The only problem encountered in that the filler plugs on the final reduction cases are darn hard to get to, impossible with a socket, and I have not been able to loosen them with and open ended wrench. If I open and drain all three drain plugs (axle, and right and left final reduction cases) am I able to adequately refill all three using only the front axle differential filler hole?

Thanks in advance!

On my NH 1920 4WD, the front axle housing is separate from the engine casing so they need to be changed separately. There is also an engine oil filler spout under the hood. Ford 192 Oil change - YouTube

Got a fresh engine oil/filter change, did that last week. Now I want to change the front axle oil and final reduction gear oil (4WD). No problem with the drain plugs, just having trouble removing the final reduction filler plugs.

Can you post a pic of the filler plug area, someone might suggest a wrench or method.

Are you referring to the final drive housings, adjacent the wheels, on the front axle? My IT manual says there are drain plugs in the bottom of the pinion gear housings and filler plugs near the top of the bevel gear housing, nearer the wheel. Gosh, I have never checked those on my tractor thinking that the dipstick on top of the axle would tell me if the final drive housings were low. I think they are all connected and use the same oil reservoir as the axle, but am not 100% sure. Can anyone confirm?

Looks like it turned my photo. Filler plug on upper left (if pic correctly oriented) tucked inside rim. Unless I incorrectly located it, but according to the photos in the owner's manual (black and white photos, not that clear) this is it. Same on other side. Can't get a socket in there, and I'm afraid I might strip the bolt with an open end wrench. I'd like to know what's the proper way.

Take the wheel off.

Take the wheel off.

Well, that makes sense! The manual didn't mention removing the wheel, so it didn't even occur to me ... that's why I ask you guys here.
Thanks!
