Hay Mower ?

Does anyone know if the hydraulic cylinders on hay mowers are single or dual action. When hooked to the tractor with nothing on it, it won't extend. I assume the weight has been making it go down. Goes up with no problems.

DA cylinders require 2 hoses, one at the base and one at the top where the piston comes out.

Just a hose on one end. I never paid any attention. I just assumed it would push or pull. So, one hose is a one-way operation? THanks

what type of haymower do you have? my old jd sickle has a cylinder w/ 2 hoses. 1 hose allows the cylinder to open out for lift and the other is the return to allow it to retract, lower the cutter bar. if its not extending you may not have enough hyd pressure to make it extend or possibly a low fluid condition.

If the cylinder has just one hose, then it is a SA (single acting) cylinder. Usually gravity or spring pressure is used to retract them.

OK thanks. In my case it is the shear weight that pulls it down and my hyd system pulls it up.
