Is there such a thing for tractors? If not, how does one go about learning how to disassemble and/or repair? Trial and Error? Just curious. Don't need to repair anything yet but I know I couldn't afford a dealer's rates.

Thanks,
Jeff

Get a Service Manual for your machine. That and doing your own maintenance should help.

Nothing better than the OEM service manuals. Typically aftermarket manuals will miss things can make the job very frustrating if not impossible to do correctly.

I wish there were. Not being gifted, as a mechanic, I sometimes buy service manuals by more than one author. Sometimes one will explain a particular repair in a way that I can understand it while another goes over my head.

Check with your dealer, you may just be surprised. Most of the John Deere Technical manuals for the compacts and sub-compacts are under $100 in PDF format on CD's. That's peanuts over the life of the machine IMHO, and the info included is far more detailed, including theory of operations for most systems.

I've been disappointed with every non OEM manual I've ever bought.

Found it! Will order with my next paycheck. Would have never considered going OEM but then again, never owned a real tractor before. My wife chided me for years about calling my JD STX46 my tractor.

Ebay seems to have a decent collection of Factory Service manuals for various things.

Received my new Massey-Ferguson GC1705 Service Manual Friday. They included the manual for the Iseki engine too. All I can say is WOW! Very nice and yes, a definite cut above a Haynes manual. Thank you for the suggestion as I would not have known something like this was available.:cool2:

It'd be nice if we could talk Bentley publishers into doing tractors.

I find a lot of manuals on ebay. I've also found farm equipment / tractor manuals at my local library.
