Anyone own a projection type HDTV? Would appreciate any comments on the brand and how satisfied you are with it.I've been looking at Sony and Hitachi. Thanks,Mike.

Mike, I just installed a Pioneer plasma TV in a customers home. I realize your not looking at one of these, but the place I purchased the Plasma from sells various projection brands and seemed to think Mitsubishi was the best, thats about all I know. I have a Sony projection TV that was given to me that is great. How do you plan on getting a HD signal? Rat...

As Rat stated, Mitsibishi televisions are hard to beat as our Sony's.. Don't have HDTV. The picture quality looks great in the stores.

Rat,no way to receive HD signal yet...will have to get an HD receiver one day. Some models have the receiver built in.The broadcast of an HD signal is slowly coming,I've heard that the cameras required to film HD are costing about 1 mill. each. I'm definitly waiting before I buy, hoping the cost comes down a little.

High Definition TV, but the same Low Definition programming. And the FCC thinks they are going to force everyone to HDTV by 2005.

We've had our for awhile now and have had no problems with it. Ours is a Sony. It's bigscreen and the picture is good but it's not like the difference between driving a Yugo and a Mercedes. More like the difference between a Lincoln and a Mercedes. Not alot of difference but there is some. I don't think I'd buy one again if tv wasn't going to digital. Our old one was blown up by a lightning storm and so we had the money to get a new system from that and I figured I might as well get this for a little more than the old one.

Cowboydoc:
I surprised you don't notice a greater difference between HDTV and a regular screen. Do you receive an HDTV signal and do you have a HDTV converter box? Without these the picture quality will suffer. Unless people live near a major city that broadcasts HDTV or have a satelite dish that can recieve HDTV, your picture will not be significantly different than conventional TV. DVD's, digital cable, and conventional digital satellite are slightly better on a HDTV set. I saw an older movie (Toro, Toro, Toro) played on HDTV and the picture seemed worse than on a conventional TV.
The HDTV converter boxes are different between manufactures and a standard has not yet been adopted. Currently it is like the early days of VHS and Beta. Its difficult to tell who will be the next VHS.

Radman, thats why I was asking where he was getting an HD signal. My only available source is through satelite on a couple of channels. I'm still trying to get the componet video inputs on the plasma TV to work with the satelite signal. HD also scans at 1080i which is why folks who purchase and want HDTV need a new TV that can scan at 1080, Rat

Radman,
Oh yes I have all the connections and our local stations offer it as well. I mean yes there's a difference but I certainly wouldn't have bought it if my old one hadn't gotten fried. Yes there's a difference but I really don't think it's that much of a difference. But then again I'm not a real nut at this and compare them alot. When I look at the 36" in our room compared to this one though I do see a difference but not alot.

We have a Toshiba TWX40X81 40" wide aspect ratio projection TV. HDTV compatable though we get no direct HDTV signals. We picked Toshiba because the brightness can blow you out of the room, and stood out across the room when we were looking at them. We also have a 27" Sony. When we got the Sony - it was a great improvement./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif When we got Direct-TV we thought that was great too - much sharper./w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif When we got the HDTV - things got better yet./w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif But when we got the progressive scan Toshiba DVD - now that made a difference!/w3tcompact/icons/love.gif/w3tcompact/icons/love.gif/w3tcompact/icons/love.gif Our Toshiba was first generation 16:9 HDTV. I hear they have improved the convergence adjustments and packed in more features for less $$. I really like the 16:9 (wide screen) format. As for if it is worth it - you need to decide for yourself what viewing environment you want as I have found this to be a fairly subjective area. Lastly, as for sound, the Toshiba has a GREAT sound system. If I ever get the work on the kictchen done the Toshiba will go into its own room and then we go for the surround sound [but that will take away /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif from my tractor time]
