Hearing Loss Report & Aid Recommendation

I really like the work tunes hearing protection.
You can listen to the radio and protect your ears at the same time. Only problem is they are hot in the summer time.
The in the ear plugs that are made of rubber and have a string between the two are handy for hot summer days.
The string is nice because you can take them out and leave them hanging around your neck when not needed. This is partciluarly helpful when using power tools. Slip them in use the tool, and then pop them out when you take a cofee break or the noise levels are lower.

Sorry to hear some of you guys are having problems.

I agree about the hearing protection, both my dad and I have hearing loss, I haven't had mine checked yet, but growing up we had Dad get his hearing checked twice. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
He grew up farming with no protection, they just turned up the hood mounted radio louder. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I worked at a 1/4 mile race track for two summers and while it was detrimental to my hearing, it has to be one of the most fun ways to go deaf. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I get weird looks from my dad now when I use my 29 NRR firearm hearing protectors when I mow or do anything on the tractor for more than 10 minutes.
I modified my hearing protectors with noise canceling headphones so they really work well and I even use them when I fly. I thought about Work tunes but I'd rather listen to an MP3 player when mowing for hours at a time, oh yea my headphones/hearing protection cost about 1/3 the cost of Work Tunes and I can listen to whatever I want and block those annoying people behind me on the plane. But I choose not to listen to music when I use the loader or move bulky objects and I also only mow when everyone is inside the house.

I can post pics of my headphones/hearing protection if there is interest in it.

Although I know I'll need hearing aids down the road (I'm in my mid 20's), I still don't regret the way I lost my hearing (the track even said I could have my old job again this last summer /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif).
For all the young guys, please consider getting an MP3 player and some hearing protection, you won't regret it. If you choose to lose your hearing, do it at the track.

WHAT?!???!!

This past weekend I was shooting at a National Forest range with some friends and we all had eye and ear protection. I even had to use ear plugs and muffs when shooting the 50bmg. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif What shocked me was when we were winding down about 5 'hunters' all in cammo came up with their blackpowder guns. No eye protection and NO hearing protection. That included their 5-6 year old child. I handed off some disposable protection to a friend and she walked over and had them put em in the kids ears.

I'm sure they will all be deaf in a few more years. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Protecting your grandchildren is important. I'm totally deaf in one ear (Acoustic Nueroma) and have a hearing aid for the other. We do a lot of shotgun, rifle and pistol shooting. My 5 grandchildren are being instructed in the safe use of firearms and hearing and eye protection is a must. They accept it without question. Powersaw use is another mandatory eye and ear protection event.

Many of us have damaged or lost our hearing, no one ever mentioned it when I was in the Army firing a multitude of weapopns. We have the opportunity now to protect the younger ones and teach them what we found out by living it.

I'm not an expert but it looks like you have the common and dreaded high-frequency rolloff that is often a result of exposure to loud noise levels for extended periods of time.

I'm 50 and my hearing loss started about a decade ago and is getting to the point it is bothersome. If there is background noise, I cannot understand conversation well. I know there is a hearing aid in my future, but I'm putting that off as long as possible because that is another technology that is improving and getting cheaper every year.

I wear ear plugs, just those little foam or silicone ones, whenever I use my tractor. I like it, it give me a floaty feeling to have the movement of the tractor without the loud rattle of the diesel /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
