Dmccarty,

Sound advice. The "chain saw" and "very, very careful" part is always good to be reminded of.

Above is aspartame manufacture's site; it seems quite good with good references cited at the end of each question.
A 12 oz can of pop has around 175 milligrams of aspartame in it( depends on each bottler's formula-some are sweeter than others). For The World Health Organization, Europe and Canada the acceptable daily intake(ADI) is 40mg per kilo( for the US it's 50 mg per kilogram[2.2 lbs]). Taking the conservative 40 mg/kilo, a 70 kilo person would reach that with 16 12oz cans; with an ADI of 50 mg/kilo 20 12 oz cans would do it. This number is always pegged conservatively; there is a study cited in THE JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NUTRITION 1987 of blood levels with subjects taking in the equivalent 33 and 65 cans a day with blood levels well below toxic levels. A long term study cited in the ARCHIVES of INTERNAL MEDICINE 1989 followed 108 subjects half on placebo and half on the equivalent of 28 cans a day. There was no significant difference in blood levels over that 6 mo. time period.
There are discussions re siezures, allergy, headaches, brain, tumors, hyperactivity, breast feeding and pregnancy. The danger to PKU patients (phenylketonuric patients) is well understood and refered to on the cans of diet pop. Basically these people( 1:15,000) cannot metabolize phenylalanine, a common amino acid - protien building block- and aspartame is a precursor of phenylalanine. PKU patients must avoid phenylalanine from various sources in the diet so as to avoid its accumalation and toxicity.
I am sure there are all sorts of web sites purporting various adverse reaction of aspartame but the data is pretty much antedotal. This stuff has been around for 30+ years and is passing the test of time when consumed with in known limits. Over 31 years of doctoring I 've never seen a case of acute toxicity from aspartame-- there are clinical cases of young children ingesting 25 to 100 packettes over a short time without signs of toxicity.
BTW a packette of EQUAL has 39 mg of aspartame and NUTRASWEET ORIGENAL has 36.6 mg.

Re: Heat stroke isn\'t cool...

Harv - Thanks for the post. That was an interesting experience you related, too. My first experiences since "changing my ways" have been very positive, though I haven't had opportunity (thankfully!) to test it in quite such extreme conditions that made me sick in the first place. I did work a couple of days in low-to-mid-90's temps with mid-to-high-90's humidity and I felt so much better at the end of the day it was incredible. I'm going to be very careful to drink plenty of Dr. RCH's "solution" from now on, I can tell you. One of the days I'm referring to, I drank 6 of those 52-oz "Xtreme Gulps" full - one with using Karo, and the others using NutraSweet-based flavorings. I also found that I maintained my ability to eat normally - usually when I work in those conditions, I don't eat because I'm not hungry, which makes the other problems worse, of course. But "the solution" seems to fix all that. FWIW, I've found that Crystal Light makes some stuff called "Body Quencher" that contains about 10% of a bunch of vitamins and minerals in a couple of different flavors and only 5 calories that works very well. I use it most of the time now, though there are some NutraSweet Cool-Aid mixes that taste pretty good with the salt and baking soda added.
