Last year I bought a 5' bush hog brand cutter that is 20+ years old that is made of 1/4 plate. It has the slip clutch and gear box never heats up when running. Paid $200 and had to rebuild the u-joint at the tractor. Sorta feel like FWJ because that's all I can afford at what the dealers want today.

While I think the 295 is enough mower for the task at hand, the 325 ISN'T "way too much bush hog" for that tractor. I run a 326 Bush Hog behind my 150 Massey. That's the same exact engine and drivetrain as his 135 and I have no issues with power or durability (either the tractor's or the mowers) . That term "minimum" should read "suggested" in order to use it's strength to the fullest potential. In most conditions, the tractor won't know the difference between one 5' cutter and another.

I also have a 286, the earlier version of what is now the 296 and have used it in conditions that would make most people run for cover. No complaints with the durability there either.

If you are just mowing light grass with it, I guess it would work. I've got a 6 foot squealer on my 2135 and it will bog down in heavy grass. I'm sure the weight of a 325 will make the front end light also. There is a reason they have recommended minimum horsepower and especially if you are going to use it to cut 3 inch saplings.

I bought the 326 to use in heavy brush and weeds. Like I mentioned, it gets used on the 150 Massey. That particular tractor is plenty heavy on the front end, but in no way does it suffer for power with that mower. It's absolutely no different than any other 6' mower in that regard. Thick grass is probably harder to mow in than brush. Grass tends to put more of a load on the tractor than brush in many cases.

You may want to also look at the Rhino 260. It has 2 1/2 in capacity, weighs in at 998lbs and will surely do the jobs you want and what I would think should be significantly less.

Just a thought.

I'm looking for a heavy duty 5ft bush hog to clear some old fields with. The land we own is an old homeplace, and it's been years since these fields have been cut down. There are a bunch of small saplings about 2-3 inches in diameter.

Specifically I'm looking for one with a slip clutch. I just got off the phone with my dealer and he said a new Bush Hog 325 was going to cost 2800 bucks!! Can that price be right?

I don't want to pay more than $1000, but maybe I will have to. I don't care to buy used, as long as whatever I'm buying has been taken care of, or not used too hard and all tore up.

What are your suggestions for me? My tractor is a MF 135 diesel. Thanks.

I have a 6-ft Hawkline heavy duty rotary mower that I got for $1150. It has a 50 hp gear box, slip clutch, 1/4" plate and C-channel deck sides. It's made in Ohio.

I run it with my Mahindra 5525 (55 hp engine, 45 hp pto).

I haven't chopped saplings with it, but it works fine in 3-ft tall heavy grass.

BTW: I have a 1964 MF-135 diesel.

Haven't tried out the Hawkline brush hog on it yet.

You might want to look into the woods brush bull line. You should be able to get one for around 1600.

Flusher...... I'm looking for a 6' rotary cutter and one of the ones I'm looking at is the Hawkline but everything I can find out says Hawkline is an importer and does not build anything in the US?

They seem to be registered as Hawkline Nevada LLC and have offices in Ohio. They also do not seem to have a dedicated website so I can't find any info on the mowers such as what guage steel is in the decks, size of mower blades, warranty, if any?
