heavy rust removal (sandblasting)

I use the elctrolysis method for reclaiming cast iron cooking utensils and it works GREAT.

I doubt it is practical for the starting gate ...

Lol spiker it figures that rust removal would be listed on a DB web site. I have two that i am working on restoring. One i will use for everday work and the other i will restore as near original as i can.
I have started with one of the sanding disks that you can put on an angle grinder and its taken the stuff off quick, most of the time i have hit bare metal. i do also have a wire wheel, but i have not decided to break that open yet. Once it gets nicer i plan on doing some chemical stripping. I didnt know about those rust inhibitors, ill have to look for them.

( I'm not opposed to it. But this thing is very large and the converters start at around $8 a can. I would need many, many many cans.

As for manure. Horses are only in this for about 2 minutes max. )

Actually about $40 a gallon, covers 500 sq ft. Not sure how to figure sqft on your device, but painting something on is way easier than sand blasting. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was thinking more about the jockey's leaving some residue on the gate, if you are training high-strung horses.... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I would recomend getting a professional outfit to blast and paint it for you. When I worked for a blasting and painting company at a shipyard, we did many trailers. I would blast them and then paint them using a three step process. First coat would be Zinc primer, then we would prime it then finish coat. I have a utility trailer done this way and it should be arround for my grandkids to use (I am 27). Like was mentioned before you could skip the zinc primer and go to a 235 Bar Rust. Then put your finish coat.

We blasted shrimpboats and what we used were 1600CFM
with 600 pound blasting pots. We ran (3) 600 pound pots on the one compressor and had all the pressure we wanted. Trailers were a walk in the park.

Mike, I agree with the have a company blast it if possible route, They will be much faster at it and you won't have to suit up for the job... I have not read all the posts thouroughly to see if the whole thing needs blasted or just around joints, but I guess if it was just joints you could blast that yourself..

As the other posters have stated heavy scale should be taken off first so the sand blasting can go much faster.. Once its clean you can also look into a product named por-15 which bonds to the metal then a good 2 part primer and urethane paint ... Once its blasted don't waste any time getting the first coat of whatever process your going with on the gates and make sure not to touch it with bare oily finger prints if you can help it ... Wipe clean with laquer thinner before spraying first coat....
No I'm not a painter (for anyone other than myself) and I don't play one on TV ,but it is all about preperation and alot of common sense... Good Luck!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

alright, thanks guys.

I will get a few quotes. I'm pretty sure they are too big to be dipped as there arn't many around here let alone places doing something that big. (and doing it myself would kill the fishies in our pond, AGAIN (another story))

Thanks again for all your help, I will post pictures of the project as it progresses.
