LS XR4040
Hope I can some help, have an XR4040 tractor that when I turn the key, nothing happens...np panel lights, won't start...nothing. I have ensured the PTO is not engaged, its in neutral, emergency brake is on. I thought it was a safety switch but I was told if it was a safety switch the instrumental lights would still come on? I am not certain that is true. I have checked the 3 safety smiths I an award of... clutch, seat and PTO. they all seem to be working as far as nothing is blocking them from depressing. Any ideas, i really do not want to take it to the dealer. I have has this LS tractor for 3 years and no issue, I also have the backhoe attachment... not sure if that has a safety switch somewhere

You will need an assistant for this test. Makes sure the tractor has brakes on and in Neutral so if it starts it wont' run you down.

Take you multimeter set on volts and read the voltage directly on the battery posts. NOT the battery terminals yet. ON THE POSTS only. Have assistant attempt to start tractor. What did the voltage read before and after the attempt to start tractor. Get back to us.

Test battery, switch and make sure in neutral and go peddle in neutral

If those check out ok start checking your wire harness, mine has been trouble

The first thing we need to determine is the battery dead or not. We do that by measuring the battery voltage with a voltmeter in the no load state and then with putting a load on the battery. There can be many different problems that could cause the symptoms the OP described. We need to determine what the actual problem is by eliminating the possible problems one at a time. Battery, battery terminals, battery cables, battery and ground connection points at the starter and the ground lug bolt, Main 60 amp fuse blown (always for a reason). Or even mouse chewed wiring, or defective key switch.

LOTS and LOTS of reasons. We can sit back and speculate all we want. BUT to diagnose and repair the problem the scientific method must be employed. And it isn't rocket science either. some simple tests will tell us what we need to know to proceed. If test one involves going to a store and buying a voltmeter and watching some videos on how to learn how to use it, then so be it. If that seems to daunting, then perhaps tractor repair is not for you. Simply pick up the phone and call the dealer or winch it up on the trailer. But if you want to learn something and to be independent, then perform the tests and get back to me.

When that happens, I always suspect a dead battery first. With no instrument lights, it would have to be completely dead which could happen it something caused a dead short. With a 3 year old battery, I would suspect it going bad as a first check. After that, it could be lots of things and I would start at the battery and work back toward the key to check for power then out from the key to the starter. Your power should be going thru a series of fuses before getting to the key.
With no instrument lights, I wouldn't suspect any safeties to be the problem.

I would assume OP tried jumper cables or battery testing as 1st step??? If not, ya, start there. My first guess after that would be the key switch, esp if parked outdoors or tight under a tarp where moisture in the switch could cause problems. No idea where 4040 switch is mounted, but my 2025 had it right in front center of steering column where I nonstop bashed the key with my knee. How I didn't break it is a mystery.....
