John Deere 1630 David Brown 990 Farmall Super A
Hello all. New member. I have a few tractors. But my newest one (to me) is a 1977 John Deere 1630.

So, I don't have the service manual or owners manual..yet. From what I can find on the 1630 (and it isn't much)
It's a Canadian and European model. (body made in Germany, engine in France, 145 loader in Canada)

To my question.

I was under the assumption that this transmission (4-8 with NO hi-lo) had a parking gear. But I can't for the life of me get it into park. There is no parking brake, and no place that I can see where one would be. Is there a way to check this transmission for a parking gear?

Thanks everyone.

Matt

:welcome: to TBN

So it shows P for park but won't go into that position, or just won't lock up the tranny in that P position? Others knowing more will likely chime in.

Good to have you as a member. Nice tractor, looks in good condition and well cared for too.

Welcome to TBN
RH gearshift lever must be inserted 1 of the 4 gear locations for LH gearshift lever to go into "P" position.

JD utilty tractor operators had so much difficulty putting some model utility tractors into "park" that JD engineers designed the following "park lock assurance kit" which most tractor operators I was around disliked the kit. The kit did make it easier to get tractor in park. I remember back when I was a JD dealer service manager sending technicians out to customers farms to install the "kit". When attempting to put trans in park try jacking up 1 rear wheel so tire can rotate to determine if shifter will slide into "park position".

I had the same tractor years back and as long as you have it in gear it should engage the park setting. Its possible it may be broke, not sure how to tell externally what you may have going on.

Well, thank you all. Firstly, (wagtail) tractordata is my #1 goto for general tractor info.. of course, in terms of the 1630, the data is a bit limited. I got the tractor into park today. Took a bit to figure it out though. I put the gear selector into 1st gear, and the range selector into P. That didn't work. I had the bucket resting on the ground. I lifted the bucket, and low and behold....the selector slid into P. Just that small amount of movement allowed PARK to be selected. Similar to what (Tx Jim) said. tried it numerous times....worked every time. My entire property (20 acres) is basically hill, so having either the parking gear or parking brake is mandatory...

Thank you all. Happy to be here.

If you ever have "park shift lever" stick into park slot from pressure being applied to drivetrain from stopping tractor on a hill you may have to utilize FEL bucket to help relieve tension on rear wheels to get tractor out of "park"
