Hello and ty in advance.

I have been operating equipment for 30 years, but never professionally. I have been hiring out part time for a few years. I plan on making this full time. I don't have a lot of $$$$ to invest, so I have been gathering used attachments for years and repairing and/or modifying for my needs , plows discs tiller mowers etc. my issue has been with pto shafts, everything is shear pin. After researching , I am definitely going to clutch style. The issues have been from yokes bending from tree roots to u joints snapping, for many various reasons I aware of. The soil conditions in my area from clean to basketball sized rocks , (my solution for that has been to plow, disc , heavy rake , light rake , have homeowner assist in removing rocks, then roto till. In other words I have a handle on my situation , at least I believe , but I am very open minded , so any suggestions are appreciated . Any way I have made the decision to replace all of my pto shafts with new. I see on ebay all ranges of prices, I don't mind spending money for good equipment when necessary. I would like suggestions on this forums opinions of the best bang for the buck pto shafts, and or clutches. As many of you know high price doesn't always mean high quality. Thank you for all opinions and suggestions , btw I am running a 4600 JD, 43 HP 35 HP PTO RATING

excellent first post!

Welcome!

I recommend you start a new thread with a specific title. something like: PTO shaft and clutch replacement recommendations?

That will get the attention of someone who may have specific experience. Myself, never done such replacements.

Use your full paragraph .... it already very well explains what you need...no need to rewrite, just copy/paste.

I've no personal experience with the clutch system, but from what I've heard and read, it's great IF YOU SPEND THE TIME TO KEEP IT PROPERLY ADJUSTED. So I decided long ago to stay with shear pins.

Welcome to the forum. Had to use Google to find where you are - almost in Oregon.

Anyhow - IMHO - texasjohn has the best idea for your getting attention and some answers.

Have a couple pto attachments, sheared a few bolts but never done a replacement such as you want to do.

And I can sure identify with your "soil" type. Good luck

there's a guy on ebay who sells a lot of pto shafts.. I bought one of the slip clutch ones from him afte ra shear pin one broke in my brush cutter. I have a 65hp gear box brush cutter and 65hp tractor. the shaft I bought from him has held up well to that cutter even though it wasn't even his heaviest pto shaft.

i can't remember but i think it was around 130 - 150 in price..

Ty all for the very warm welcome, I am looking forward to working with the people on this forum, ty again. also reposting now. I also read the thread , very helpful. I can repair and/ or fabricate anything from automatic transmissions to building my own dump beds, scissors and all. So I will try to add to this forum by sharing my experience .

Rob it kind of makes one wonder why the shear pins didn't let go before any bending took place . I have both and prefer the shear pin ones as the clutch ones need adjustment if they sit for any length of time and I find that a pain .

I would guess that the bolts you are using are to hard and that is why you are breaking things. I don't like slip clutch ptos. I am in to much of a hurry or to lazy to set them for 15 min. work.

Greetings, Rob, and welcome to TBN!
Make sure you get the right series for each application.
Some useful information to aid you on your quest:

I'll second Jim and say that each implement would have to be matched to a shear pin or clutch setting. It should not matter what the implement goes on as far as HP goes, it would be the force at which the shear pin/clutch is supposed to let go in order to protect the implement. If the implement can take more power then your tractor can provide then i would think you would want to protect your tractor by allowing the shear pin/clutch to release.
