Tractor
Montana 4344
I've been thinking about getting a tractor for about the past year, after our homestead burned in a wild land fire on July 16th, 2006; 2 years ago yesterday. So, on that anniversary date, I finally made the commitment and ended up with a brand new 4344HST. I have been seriously searching for a tractor for about 3 months and was pretty sure I was going to end up with a harvest return John Deere 4120. My main shopping source has been the local Sacramento craigslist where I saw this tractor;
John Deere 4120 4WD Tractor with Loader
The price as posted was $20,139 for the tractor and a FEL , used with about 150 hours on it.

I had been also checking out the Kubotas too, but those harvest returns were much smaller in size. Reason I was focusing on the harvest returns was because they are discounted from new prices, carry full warranty and had 0% financing for varying months depending on brand and size. I really didn't want to cash a deal if I didn't have to. Well, craigslist had this Montana tractor keep popping up; a 4344HST w/FEL advertized for $18,684 cash or another thousand added, $19,684 for the 0% financed plan. I called the dealer and made an appointment to come look at it. The sales man, a young, 19 year old guy with over 10 years operating tractors on his grandfather's ranch, met me and we talked tractor for a couple hours as I demo'ed all the various one's he had on hand; Mahindra, Branson and Montanas. Well, that Montana really got under my skin and we went into the office to talk price. That's where I met the owner, Jon. A great big guy with a big heart as well. We hit it right off and somehow worked into the conversations of bass fishing, my fire loss and grandchildren, just what I wanted and what I needed in a tractor. As Jon would talk, mentioning implements, sizes and prices, I just kept my mouth shut and thumbed through my stack of statistics on the tractors I've already been testing at other dealers. Jon must have thought I was hesitating on the prices he was dropping his price without me even asking him to. Eventually he came to a price of $16,588 for the 4344HST w/FEL including the sales tax. That included the $1500 discount from the factory and applied to my down payment. He sent in the application for financing and before we finished a cold drink, I was approved.

In the end, I added a backhoe,; 8600 series, 18" bucket, 6ft box scrapper w/Tnt hydraulics, toothbar to the loader and tax for everything. He showed me the invoice for the accessories and that's what I paid for them. He made a call and everything was added to the 0% financing and there was no additional down payment for them; just the $1500 rebate applied as the down

I figure this was about $4,000 savings over the John Deere harvest return tractor I had been considering. So, I hope that sounds like a good deal on this great tractor. They delivered it today and spent 4 hours showing me how everything works; backhoe operation, installation and removal, box scrapper and FEL as well. No charge for any of that. Any repairs and service needed will be done at my place unless I want them to haul it back to their shop, about an hour away. No additional charge under warranty.

This site was a deciding factor in choosing this brand. I could hardly find any negative posts and even those were so trivial as to not be considered in the equation. I think I did good.

congragulations with your purchase. You will be very happy with it. Sounds like a good price to me also. Just curious what you paid for the backhoe as I am interested in getting one down the line. I wanted one when I bought the tractor but couldnt swing the extra money at the time.

Also need to have pics.

Thanks jdeerekid!
I got the 8600 backhoe from Montana. It operates off the rear PTO meaning it has it's own pump and fluid, saving the tractor from getting too hot. (Or so I was told.) Specs are on the Montana site. I paid $6,000 plus tax. The next one smaller, the 7600 was $5,000. But after testing them side-by-side, I wanted the power. I have lots of rocks!! The smaller one is easier for finesse work though. Both are 3Pt mounted, not subframe. I think I would prefer the subframe type as it looks easier to put on and off, but what do I know. I'm just jazzed not to be digging holes to plant trees by hand anymore. I've dug and planted 27 15 gallon trees by hand in very rocky soil. Now I'll have reason to enjoy the task. I lost aobut 100 fully mature oaks in the fire and have lots of work to get the land back to something nice and not a scorched earth look.

So new, I don't have photos hosted to post up, but will soon!!

Those are some monster rocks. What do you think they weigh? Also are you saying that your backhoe is not a subframe mount. Is it 3pt hitch?? I would be careful when diging if it is 3pt mount as there is alot of stress points that can potentialy break, just a heads up. Also can you get some pics of the backhoe and monting points and the tnt??? Is the tnt montana brand??

You also have a nice looking place and hope the tractor works out for you.

Post your project photos to lots of people here love looking at what other people are doing with there tractors and get good ideas.

Have fun.

I have no idea what the rocks weigh but they are heavy. I had to set my RM to about 2200 and the first couple tries the lift wouldn't lift it due to it's position to other rocks around. The rocktooth on the FEL is a God send. I just angle it down slightly, drag it in the dirt up to the rock, then drive into the rock while tipping the bucket and dropping the loader into the ground some more to keep the rock from just scooting away or rolling. Then, back off a foot or so, drive forward again, rocking the boulder into the bucket. Once in, I tipped the bucket back all the way and lifted up about 3 feet. Then I bounced the bucket up and down to settle the rock in right.

Yes, the backhoe is 3 point mounted. The dealer told me it was as strong as a subframe and that due to my rocky soil, the subframed hoe mounted tractor would have trouble getting around. After seeing several subframed hoes on tractors, I'd have to agree; it REALLY cuts into ground clearance. But what a pain in the patutie to put it on and off!! Whew! If I break the tractor or hoe, then it's covered under warranty. If warranty is expired, my homeowner's insurance covers it. My agent sold me an all encompassing policy that covers any damage that happens to the tractor as long as I'm the driver and it's on my property.

So, tell me about 3PT mounted backhoes and what the story is on them and subframes. I know NOTHING!!! (Well, I know how to spend money....)

I'll take some photos of the hoe and it's mounting points. The TnT isn't any brand that I am aware of. It just consists of a couple rams; one on the right lower arm and one at the top point. I can just tip it up all the way and have about 2" of rake drag the ground. Works like a champ popping rocks!!

Oh, and thanks for the compliment on the house. We lost our home to a wild land fire 2 years ago; July 16th. I made it out of the house wearing shorts and sandals; didn't even get my wallet. Wife grabbed one of the dogs and her purse. That was it. Every thing else was lost, boats, cars, motorcycles, pets, livestock, too many trees to even count, all my guns (too many of those to count too). I didn't even have a shirt! Ha!! Wife and I designed this log style home to our personal preferences after pouring over floor plans, books and magazines. It's pretty cool inside too.
