I also think it's the switch. If it has an internal short it could divert enough power away from the starter solenoid to cause it to chatter in and out. Causing the clunk/click noise. Same could happpen if it is not making good contact inside the switch.

Leaving the key in the switch could cause some of the problem. If the key doesn't have a rubber boot that covers the switch when it's inserted then water, etc can channel down beside the key and cause internal corrosion and/or shorting.

Try the test i mentioned... hook up a spare jumper wire to the small terminal on the solenoid.. remoe the other one that comes from your key switch... jumper power to that small terminal.. if it cranks over, the bendix /solenoid is good.. but your starter switch/wireing is bad.
