I have been reading alot on this forum, and it has tought me alot of things, but I feel i should lay out my situation to better explain what I have on me.

I have recently inheirted (sp,? sorry) 24ac of land. old farm. On this farm is a old road that goes straight up he side of one hillside. it is bad shape. there is also an old home that i have to remove the asbestos singles off the side before tearing it down.

In my area it cost 3600.00 to rent an JD 450 older model. I have been weighing the thought of purchasing a machine with warranty to keep for as long as i can, with the hopes of not having to sell it off when finished with it.

wife'y and i have computed that if we combined our vehicle payments (high interest rates) and other c.card balances and extend it by 3 years at a lower rate, we can get a 05 CAT d5g, (850 hrs) ffor 63,500. or a 07 JD 450j (300 hrs, with cab) for 75,000, or a 06 jd450j w/o cab but with winch (900 hrs) for 79,000.

On my farm, i have room for about 10 home sites for future family members (kids, etc), if i take down about 13 acres of saplings and about 3 acres of nice white and red oak. In the mean time run some cattle/fainting goats, to keep it cleaned up while working a little every day. Plus building a small pond with overflow at a creek that drys up during the summer months. My property needs a new road cut around the side of hill for access to the most beautiful pastures on top in which you can see the whole town.

On reason i'm leaning toward buying a new used
machine is due to fear of a money pit on a older machine with over 3-4000 hours etc.

any suggestions on which machine would be appreciated, as i have some rock in places mostly shell. and the trees. I'd also like to know more from people who have a d5G as i'm leaning this way due to the weight on ground, and CAT certifies that the under carriage has some what looks like some potential hours left . a friend told me the hours they have listed that a part timer like me will have to run it to death to get to that point.

any suggestions and qestions will be greatly appreciated.

sincerely, jb

I got a D5G Cab dozer this spring and have been using it for road improvements and for site work for a new shop/barn. Like you, I wanted something that wasn't going to be broken more than working, and something that would have good resale potential when my major projects are finished. I settled on a 2006 model with about 1000 hrs on it and a 1 year warranty. The under carriage is in great shape, but the bearings on the blade tilt and angle cylinders were worn and sloppy. Also the greaser hoses had sheered off on the angle cylinders so that end had been run dry for some time. I've replaced all the parts (5 out of 6) except one of the tilt cylinder ends and greaser hose because the pin is rusted in. I've been soaking it in penetrating oil and will try again once the shop site work is done. Total cost to me was $75. I did the work, and Cat supplied the parts, but I had to have a guy press out two of the bearings that were rusted in.

It's an amazing machine. Aside from pushing dirt, I've been able to dig up a dozen or more rocks the size of large sofas that probably weigh 4000 lbs each. I've also been able to break up large sections of soft ledge.

Have you operated both machines? I don't have any experience with the 450 Deere, but I think it's a bit smaller than the D5. I think the D5 is closer to the 650 Deere. I assume the Deere is a hydro drive too? It's pretty nice on the Cat. Just a joy stick and two push buttons to set the speed. Even I can handle that!

One thing I'm not a big fan of is the forward/reverse/speed control on the Cat. The joy stick is on/off in forward and reverse. Speed is not controlled by proportionally pushing the joy stick further forward of backwards, but rather by two push buttons on the joy stick. You push one button to step up the speed, and the other to step it down. Each time you push the button it goes a little faster or a little slower. The steering is propotionally controlled by the joystick position, but not the speed. If I recall correctly the Komatsus have a proportional forward/reverse speed contol joy stick, but I don't know about the Deere. I guess the advantage of the push button is that every time you change directions you go back to your preset speed.

Good luck with your purchase.
