Hi All

Well did a dumb thing the other day I knew would happen and as luck has it it did what I thought it would do , LOL now I need to see how to fix it.

I have a farmall 340 and wanted to get the block coolant drain thumb type pipe plug out to drain it, and sprayed some rust killer on it and tried to get it out cold,

YUP stupid thing to do , but hey managed to break the thumb part off , so now all I have is a broken pipe plug in the block HAHA, so to all you wise ones who have been there done that whats the best fix ?

Many say heat but the carba nd fuel lines are like 4" from it so thats a bit not so good, some say drill it out and easy out it with heat, some say cut a grove in it with a small zip cut and use a impact hammer screwdriver to turn it out with heat, some say weld a nut or bolt on it but its cast to steel so welding that is something special Im told.
Anyway you guys get the picture.

Id love to hear from others who have done the same silly thing before and how to fix it .

Thanks

so what do you use to weld a steel nut to a cast iron plug that will hold ? sure a reg mig wont do it it will prolly break right off

when they say weld a nut to it ...what you do is put a big nut up to it and weld inside the nut to the plug . you have to wait till the weld cools .but the plug still hot and start turning it out .. you mite end up doing this 2 3 times . nut keeps braking off ..good luck .. or if you can get a col chisel in there and start it moving that way.. and a good rod that will work with out getting fancy is 7018...

I've done a couple on the C-113 & C-123's. I remove the whole outlet, and put in a padded vise. Cut two grooves in the pipe, so as to knock a small section out with a small chisel, or pin punch. Then collapse the rest of the piece rolling inward. It should allow it to fall out.

Replace with either a brass, or stainless nipple coated with never-seize.

If the gasket gets torn, it's pretty simple to tap out another if you have gasket material on hand.

A lot more work, but I hate working, standing on my head..., LOL...

I cant picture the type of plug you are trying to get out, but is there anything left that can be gripped by a pair of channel locks, vice grips, or small pipe wrench???

With pipe plugs in engine blocks, and old trick is to use heat and a wax candle. Heat the plug itself. Then touch the candle wax to it and the heat will cause the liquid wax to wick into the treads. Let it cool off and it will come out easily as the wax loosens and lubricates the threads.

Penetrating oil is about worthless on pipe threads, cause the design of the threads and plug is made specifically to seal liquids/air OUT. But the heat and wax work like a charm.

Guess I read too quickly this morning, and now see which plug you are trying to remove.

Actually, if you want to lower the coolant level, the drain is at the front left, and a pipe nipple drops out of the radiator outlet. There should be a pipe cap on the end of the nipple to drain it. Open this link, and look for #'s 13, 14 & 15. Official Case IH Online Parts Store and Case IH Catalog for Best Parts Search and Best Parts Look Up. Case IH Parts for Case IH Tractors, Case IH Combines, Case IH Tractors, Case IH Manuals, Case IH Parts

I was thinking the outlet was similar to the one's on the C-113 & C-123's, but it's not... Sorry...

I'm not sure how much access you have but you can try a easy out extractor. I would use the Bluepoint screw extractor from Snapon that fit in a 1/2 inch socket that usually don't break as often. You could try that with heat around the plug.

Thanks everyone, well I drained out the system with the front plug , which was plugged up with gunk had to coathanger it to get it to drain a drop, flushed and filled many times with water and now has coolant in it , ID still like to get that side plug out but I guess it really did not need to be removed after all.

I will try to weld a bolt on it or nut and see if it comes loose wity the heat from the weld if that dont work Ill easy out it , thanks fo all the help and ideas.

next job drain and fill the common hydro/ trans oil, seems 3 point wont lift so either low on fluid whcih is the next task, but conmfused as it calls for hytrans oil but is that the same as THG for common resivors ?

any oil help would alos be helpfull, must be a generic fluid that will work ?
