I finally joined the flail mower group. I just picked this mower up which I was told is a Motts/Alamo flail mower. I have no idea what model it is and there is no tags on it to tell me. It measure about 77" wide.

I hooked it up and it runs ok but it does vibrate alot on startup and you must run it at 540rpm PTO speed for it to run any good. The blades are pretty dull so will need replacing. The guy also gave me a sharpener but I don't really know how to use it.

Now when I find out the model which blades should I buy??? I want to be able to mow tall grass with it and possibly some very small brush. Where do I get blades??

I took some pictures of the unit and the blades that are on it currently. The guy I bought it from had it on an old Ford 8N and used it ocassionaly to mow a field behind his house.

Can't help you with the make/model but can tell you that those blades are what are called "Y" type blades and are light/medium duty and from what I can see in your pic, only one side of those blades have been used. Unbolt them and turn them over to the sharp side. With that type "drum" you're stuck with using the same type blade or you may be able to get and use "scoop" type blades but these are more for lawn care. I also noticed that there is no cutting height adjustment on the skids/roller and it appears to have had a gage wheel set up.
I have one mower that has this type blade and have cut brush with stalks 1" thick and have mowed weeds 4 foot high with no problem. As for parts/blades, try Flail-Master - Mower Replacement Parts, Commercial Riding Mower Parts, Rotary Cutter Parts, Blade grinders, Trimmer Line, Mowing Accessories - Flail Master - Flailmaster -

Flail Master is a first class operation, when you call ask for Nicole, at least I think that is her name. Know how many blade "stations" you have on the drum and she can most likely figure out what model you have. I believe your roller adjustment is the 3 holes just above the roller bolt. I have an old Mott Hammerknife and it does good, just slow.
