Father in law recently passed away, while his 8n was outside... we need to learn to operate it and put it away for the winter, and from the location its parked in do not have the space to learn by trial and error...

I have been looking through parts diagriam and have not yet managed to find a simple picture of what each lever does:confused:

anyone got a good picture?

Sorry to hear about your father in law. Wish I could help with your questions. Someone who is actually knowledgeable will be along soon I am sure. Good luck and enjoy the tractor.

I find it very humble and intellegent of you for posting your question and not just jumping on equipment and pretending you know what your doing !
But please whatever you do make sure your sitting in tractor seat when you go to start it.
DO NOT EVER TRY TO START TRACTOR STANDING NEXT TO IT.

Whatever you do be careful of the clutch...let it out slowly when you are in gear and do not let your foot slip off the clutch...the N tractors are all bad about flipping up ..the clutch is very sensitive.

Be careful. Old tractors can do unexpected things since many of the parts are worn in the engine, transmission, hydraulics, brakes and steering.

Sounds like your FIL lived in the country. I'm sure there is a neighbor or father in laws friend who is familiar with tractors that would be more then willing to help you and show you how to operate it.
If not, be careful and as stated earlier, be sure and be sitting on the tractor before turning the key.

You will enjoy doing something new.The thought quickly turned to myself learning to drive,"Betsy",as the old 8n was called. Grandpa sitting behind me on the seat. Thanks for asking the question and bring back some good thoughts.

thanks for the help, especially the manual, I think that should answer my questions, I will print it and bring it along next time I am up there. It should run good as it was freshly restored.

This should be interesting, I am leary of things without rollcages:laughing:
