Kubota B2400
I'm not much of a mechanic, so I'll do my best to describe my problem. I've got a B2400, and I just finished the 300 hour tune-up. While I was laying under the tractor changing the hydro fluid, I noticed that my mid-PTO (I think that's what this is; it could be something else, but again, not much of a mechanical expert) was completely exposed and beginning to rust.

See picture, then next post.

Part 2. If I look close, there is a plastic sheath farther up the shaft that doesn't cover this rotating gear, but it looks like it's supposed to do so. (See attachment)

Do I need to yank this plastic piece down towards the front of the tractor, am I missing a piece, or is it fine as is?

That looks like your driveshaft for the front wheel drive. I would imagine that the boot should be slid down and over the u-joint and that lip just forward of that with some paint and some rust on it. Promably the clamp just loostened up. The mid PTO should be further back.

Yes, that guard needs to be put back in place and the clamp retightened. Must have gotten caught on something and pulled back.I don't know if the rust is normal or not, maybe someone else can answer that for you.

From your pictures I would say that this is the front drive shaft and the cover is missing. My B7500 has this completely enclosed with a cover. I am surprised that you did not notice pieces of plastic or clamps hanging down from the drive shaft at an earlier date. Maybe someone worked on your tractor and took off the cover and neglected to put it back on.

If its under warranty I would get it replaced. If not might just get a price for the cover and labor for installing it. It looks like a pretty straight forward job.

I don't know where you live but this cover keeps all kinds of stuff from winding around your drive shaft and out of your ujoints. Worst case is you can live without it but at what cost to your ujoints in the future?

Looks like the cover should slide down over the joint. I think the rust would be there anyway. I would not worry about exposing the joint. U-joints are exposed on many types of equipment and trucks. U-joint failure comes from lack of grease if it has a fitting, binding, and to some extent the elements. If you dunk the in water (for extended periods) you should grease them after. From the looks of you tractor you are not out there mudding and fording deep water often. I would not worry too much.

Doesn’t look like the boot is damaged. If there are no tears or holes in it, I’d just slide it back on with a new clamp. Heck, even if it did have a small tear I’d probably put it back anyway. Appears that you’d have to undo the u-joint to put a new boot on. Not an impossible job, but you would need some tools you probably don’t have.
