I know this has been discussed MANY times before. But I have some questions that I couldn't find answers for. I started looking at Frontier chippers but the only info I can find on them is that they are expensive. Then I came to this forum and everyone seems happy with their wallensteins. I never even heard of wallenstein. I looked into the bx42 models and think this will be a good match. But there are some trade offs. I will be chipping mostly soft woods like pine and gum. Hard woods will be burnt in the house.

The wallenstein chips up to 4". Frontier chips up to 5.5". Wallenstein is a direct drive. Frontier is belt driven. I know Frontier is made by Pequea. To tell you the truth I haven't heard of either company!

For u guys that have the wallenstein do you ever chip up to 4"? I've seen some videos and it seems like everyone is chipping small stuff? I didn't even get into gravity fed vs. hydraulics! Does anyone have a Frontier chipper?! Do you see why i need help spending my money? I'm getting ready to make a purchase and want to make the right one. Thanks

The Wallenstein is a 4 x 10 chipper and as far as I know it is the only chipper out there that has a rectangular feed. I have the hydro feed and between that and the opening it will swallow much more than a typical 4" chipper. Unless you are chipping logs which I prefer to burn, the larger feed helps with getting splayed branches down with less pruning. The Wallenstein acts like a much bigger chipper.

I have a BX62 non hydraulic feed. So far only run on the 60HP JD 2030. Ive chipped up to 4", mainly when the wife wants chips for landscaping. I see no need for hydraulic feed. it chips faster than I care to work feeding it.

A couple of months ago I found a 15 year old Valby 150. Others on this site told me Valbys are top shelf. this thing is a 6" manual feed rated up to 50 PTO HP. My 3320 is only 25 HP PTRO but it will suc in a 3" 25' Pine "weed" in about 7 seconds. We had 12" of wet snow here in central MA in Oct so we have branches all over the place. One of my kids has had it the past few weeks and he has been running it on his 2520 which I think is 20 PTO. the flywheel on this thing weighs over 200 lbs. That to me is the key. I think the Wallenstein flywheels in same size range are like half that weight.

I paid $2000 for it and am very satisfied. In my book there is not much that can go wrong with these things so I would rather spend my money on decent used of higher capacity then a new smaller unit.

By the way I recently bought a "new/used" 4720 with 200 hrs. can't wait to get it back to see what that 50HP PTO does

good luck-Pix attached.
