Help me! What\'s the value of this JD4100

Wouldn't ya know. About the time I've decided I want to buy a new JD, a deal on a used 4100 comes along that I might not be able to pass up. So I ask for your help.
Model year 2001 John Deere 4100 w/ 912 hours (one owner), turf tires.
JD410 loader
JD ballast box
JD450 rototiller
JD413 rotary cutter
JD 54" front blade w/quick-tatch
King Kutter 5' box blade
Frontier SP1060 pulverizer
4' York rake
Total package is $12K. It's at a landscape company mainly used for loader work and winter time snowplowing. The implements all look to be in great shape, that is, hardly used. The 54" front blade was added on to. It's now about 72" wide X 24" high. I'm a little dissapointed with some of the rust on the tractor fenders and the dents/rust on the hood, but those can be repaired or replaced, right? The seat is sort of shot too! The tractor puffed a little smoke when it started, but otherwise seemed to run great. No lack of power, no funny noises. Also, I wanted R-4's, but I guess I could buy new ones right? I heard R-4's and turfs go on different rims, so I guess I'd need rims too. Until now, my intention was to get a 2320 w/loader/ballast and MMM when it's available, but even though the 4100 has 20hp compared to the 2320 at 24hp, the 4100 has 7.4gpm on the pump, and the 2320 has 5.7(?)gpm. I love the idea of getting all those attachments now instead of a piece at a time over the years. I think that covers the scenario, so please, any feedback would be apprecited.
Thanks folks,
Brian

Is it an HST? That will be very hard to pass up if it is. If it has been serviced regularly, go for it. That's quite a bundle of attachments /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif At that price, you could add an entire extra set of tires and wheels and be in heaven. It sounds like it has been sitting outside, but a little cosmetic work and you are good to go.

Hey bigpete,
Sorry, yep, it is HST. He says it's been serviced properly, and he seems like a believable guy. You're right, it has spent time outside, mainly because it resided at a condo complex to plow snow. The cosmetic stuff is well within my capabilities.
Thanks,
Brian

If even some of those attachments fit what you need, that's going to be a very good deal. If not, it's a bit of a hassle to sell them and buy others, but it's still a good deal if the engine and transmission are good to go. Don't be too quick to switch the tires either. It may turn out that the turfs work just fine. If they were doing snow work, I'm surprised they don't have a set of chains for it. You might ask.

Re: Help me! What\'s the value of this JD4100

Cliff,
There's no chains. The guy did a lot of residential and commercial snow removal, some of the residential was on "steep" grades. He said it maintained traction very well. His business has grown to the point where he now uses pick-ups with warm cabs to plow snow and bigger equipment in the landscape yard to load, etc. I played with the tractor/loader in a pile of dirt and realized it ran out of traction before horsepower, so that's why I've got the idea that R-4's would be better. I like the idea of keeping all the attachments, so I don't think I'd sell them. They fit the tractor, and if someday I bought another tractor, I'd make sure they still fit. Is there any way to check out the engine and transmission further?
Thanks,
Brian

The R4s will probably be better (it's what I have), but sometimes you run out of traction as much because you don't have enough weight in the back ballast as because you don't have the right tires. When I have the backhoe (750 pounds) on my 4110, it gets great traction.

Hopefully others will answer about how to check the engine and transmission a little more throughly.

Re: Help me! What\'s the value of this JD4100

I might have a different take on this and say slow down a little !! for that machine its not a lot of hours - but its still a lot of hours (know what I'm trying to say?)....You can find much lower hour machines at of less than what he is asking with no cosmetic damage. I see both 4100 and 4110 selling close to that range. I understand he has a lot of attachments but the most valuable one is the machine with the least amount of hours IMO. You can get better attachments for less than some of his brand names. it all depends if you realy need them for you use.
I guess I would say there is no harm in looking more...
I got my used 4100 with 8.5 hours on it - hardly used I would say for a real nice price. If I can find it, so can you thats all I'm saying

Re: Help me! What\'s the value of this JD4100

4100 HST without a loader or any attachments--maybe with a belly mower--are going for about that price. Check out machinefinder.com. Yeah, I would do some comparison shopping too. Keep looking, but the loader and attachments are worth about $4,000 in that deal (maybe). Isn't yours a gear, Duc? If I recall yours was a rare steal.

Re: Help me! What\'s the value of this JD4100

For the occasional dirt work wiht the loader, I put a set of chains over the rear turfs on my 4100.. That and 1000 lbs of ballast on the back end and it definitely runs out of power berfore it runs out of traction when using the loader.

For plowing with the 54" blade, the turfs will work just fine as-is.

With the blade extended, you may run out of traction on some steep grades pushing wet snow, but its not clear to me that any other tire will have much more traction in many winter situations. usually when the ground is frozen, without something sharp to dig in like steel studs or ice-chains, the various tread designs will all do about the same since noe of them will be "digging in".

I guess the chances for finding a great used machine are increasing because of Deere introducing a newer model for less money - I just took a peak and saw some great 4100 & 4110 for sale on ebay - all with less hours and it was a mixed bag of HST & gear. But with even better options like a heated cab and blower !! I even more convinced that its now a buyers market more than ever and that he should stall on that opportunity - too many hours and cosmetic issues to rush into it....and yes mine is a gear and I'm proud /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif -some feel the gear model is the ugly duckling that nobody loves - it has found a happy home with me /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
