Hello all,

First post here but I've been enjoying the site for a couple years now, answering most of my questions by searching and reading old posts.

This is the first time I couldn't find an answer by searching so I figured I'd join and make a post about this question (and a few other topics).

I have an old post hole digger that (to the best of my ability with a tape measure instead of caliper) appears to have an 1 1/2" shaft. I need a new 9" auger bit but cannot find that fit this 1 1/2" shaft (or even locate the make/model of the unit to give you more information)...

1. Does anyone have a source for auger bits that fit 1 1/2" shaft?

2. Does anyone know if I can get a bushing/sleeve made to fit one of the bits designed for a 2" shaft on my 1 1/2" shaft? (Would lead to a problem down the road?)

Thanks for any info you can provide!

Haven't seen a 3pt phd with a 1.5" output shaft, that is very light imo. You could get a piece of bushing stock of DOM tubing to add to your shaft (1.5" id x2.00 od) to fit most of the bits. I wouldn't have much faith in this long term as the shaft will likely fail due to overloading. The reason most of these phd's are a full two inch output shaft is because it is needed. If you do add the bushing I would not use a bit over 9 inch diameter.

Thanks, when I measured it myself today with a caliper, it is actually 1 3/8" so I will be very careful about the size of auger and stick to < 9".

I realize this is an old post but I also need a 1.5" ID to 2" OD x 4" long post hole gear box to auger adapter. After a painful search I found that the phrase "2” OD X 1/4” Wall DOM Steel Tube" or "DOM Steel Tube: 2" OD x .250 Wall Tubing" brings up such tubes in Amazon and Ebay. You have to drill your own bolt holes. Looks like 4-6 day shipping so I am going to try calling local machine and welding shops to see if they have it in stock.

The tubes are slightly off the exact measurements and some show the measurements on calipers (1.493 ID, .258 wall, 2.004 OD). I will be measuring with calipers tomorrow but I suspect this is close enough. .

The story - 30 year old post hole digger on RK37HC tractor hit rocks (always around here). The two 1/2" bolts sheared instead of the 1/4" shear bolt on the drive shaft. The sleeve spun and jammed on the broken bolts and I could not find a way to get it off (used big gear puller, tried turning with punch and sledge.) I hope I did not damage the gears. I finally used an angle grinder to cut the sleeve off the gear shaft.
