I am new to this. Closed on 39 acres this week. Did get on early to do a little work this weekend with my Mahindra 4035 FEL which picked up last monday. Put it to work this weekend. The property we are buying is a has a wet weather creek running across it. Many were saying it was very unstable soil but after digging I disagree with them and also had my brother in law that is a bridge designer say it looks very stable. Any way There was a small tank/pond up in a tree covered area. We have been extremely dry but my luck since I have bought this it will not stop raining. So I thought I would clean out this tank that was now only about 3 ft deep. At about 5-6 ft i hit Rock and sand. I think some would call it caleche. sorry for the spelling it is late. Anyway will that material hold water or will I need to bring back in some of the clay.
We were lucky enough to get a 1' or more of rain last week so that made it perfect digging but by mid day on sunday it was drying out and making it harder to dig. I sure was not going to get any where in the gravel.
I am hoping after a small rain I can get in and digout some of the gravel to use for a number of project vs having it hauled in. I was hoping to get the tank at least 6' deep but if I have to bring back in some clay how much is needed for it to seal. Due to the trees it is hard to build up the up the outside edge and that may just push it back or around.
So if I need clay on top how much should I try to put in or will the sand gravel seal?
I also wanted to ask if any one has gone into there creek bed and pulled out gravel for a drive. Any concens to be away of pros and cons of doing that. my wife is concerned with additional errosion but I think it may give us some additional watering holes for live stock in the future. I do know I will have to deal with wash out. It appears this creek has a lot of water that goes down it. i would not want to be anywhere close to it during a heavy rain during a wet season.
any advise on this will be greatly apprieciated.
Thanks
