I apologize if this is a repeat newbie question(looked hard but couldn't find an answer)- I went to hook up my post hole digger(woods) -actually got the thing up off the garage floor on the tractor but cannot get the drive shaft to "seat" on the Mahindra pto- pulled the collar back, pushed the ring forward (I did line up the ball bearings correctly, several times) It seems very well greased , pushed, pulled, swore, etc. I really didn't think I should wack it with anything as I really want to reinstall the bhoe again. Any suggestions other than putting that b hoe back on & digging over 70 large holes instead of nice auger holes that should be easy to fill back?(sorry 3 hours later & frustration level at my own stupidity is right up there)

Some PTO shafts you have to twist the collar. Just a thought.

For one of mine, if you pull the collar after it hits resistance on the PTO shaft, it will not go on. You can line the spines up, back up an 1/8", pull the collar back, then push it on the PTO shaft.

I also have one that you have to twist the collar and a couple with the push button. Good luck with it...

I spray, well more like drench, the tractor pto shaft and inside of pto coupler with wd-40.

A little messy, but I find it makes taking the pto shaft on and off much easier.

also if that is the first time running the post hole digger, make sure the gear box has oil in it since most of them are empty when new.

:mur:

If it is a new shaft, the ball may not be releasing when the collar is pulled back. The Ball is what locks it to the groove in the shaft. Try lube on the ball and get it to release when the collar is pulled back then try again.

Might work

My :2cents:

Definitely want to lube the **** out of both tractor shaft and auger coupler. Also try the coupler where you can see the bearings and lube them well, maybe even see if you can get them to retract by pressing on them with a screw driver while moving the ring. Only other suggestion would be to reduce the angle of the shaft to give a straighter shot. Good luck.

Thank you! I am finally going to attempt all of your suggestions today, dislocated my finger, so I the darn thing has just been sitting. I am still not right but have to suck it up and get this done. I will let you know what works.

I hope the pto slides on easy. Just a tip, I hang my post hole digger from a chain. Just wrap the chain around the boom near the gearbox and slip a bolt through it. plan on hanging the chain from a piece of sliding door track for easy line up and take up less room in the shed

Hey there is no way I can thank everyone for their help and suggestions. Today I finally got the drive shaft on- one ton of lithium grease- slide and twist the metal collar and it's on ! HURRAY. I am now so far behind schedule but most of that is due to the dislocated finger. We dug 48 holes today & set the digger in the ground( Yep I bent the top bolt by setting this up in the middle hole mount on the tractorinstead of the top & have to get someone over to cut it out) -yeesh I guess as long as I don't keep making these rookie mistakes , I might get everything done)Please anyone else that reads this learn from my mistakes! Thank you all for your help- Looking around the property to find the right tree to hang the digger for ease of re-install-wrappred the drive shaft in heavy duty plastic to keep it clean & lubed -checked the fluid level , thank god the dealer topped it off-This board is the best, god only knows how much trouble I can get my self into , without everyones help & assistane my horse would be waiting forever fro a decent size turnout!- THANK YOU!!
