Hi y'all. I am posting hoping that someone out there can help. We had a barn fire last October and our 6 foot snowblower was pretty damaged. This was given to us to use so we are not even sure what brand/type it is. We have a friend who is a master welder and offered to help us spruce it up if we could to give back to the owner- heres the problem. Husband says we need to replace the gearbox. We have no idea how to find one or who even sells them etc. Any ideas? Without much knowledge of the model etc. we are really at a standstill. If we can measure it etc. would that help us? Is there such a place (even online) where we can purchase a new gearbox? Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated. We used this and it was used when we got is so really hesitate to use our insurance money to buy this guy a new one if we can fix the old one. Are gear boxes costly?

Welcome to TBN:D

Why does the gearbox need to be replaced? If it was damaged in the fire then probably just the seals are bad...and they may be easy to get.

Since you cannot tell us any more info, can you please post a picture of it and hopefully someone will recognize what you have.

OK thank you. Just talked to my hubby- he says he is pretty sure it melted! the fire was very hot - BUT we will get some pictures and post. Thank you for your help and response. I am still open to any suggestions tho- is there a online store to buy gear boxes and replacement parts?

If the fire was hot enough to "melt" a gearbox, than shurely the rest of the blower is trashed as well. There are bearings that would be cooked, and a lot of sheet metal parts and shafts that would warp with that kind of heat.

I might suggest you look for a used blower to replace this one.

1st sorry to hear of the bad luck. But the gearbox is the most robust metal on a snowblower. If it melted then the rest of the unit would be in worse shape. If the case is in ok shape then bearings and seals can probably be found.

Post pictures to identify the condition of the unit.

I agree, the chance of hurting the gearbox and the rest of it being in good enough shape to rebuild is almost impossible. Melted seals on the gearbox can be fixed with no problem and not nearly as expensive as a gearbox (if you can find one)

Along with the damage already mentioned that would have been caused by the extreme heat the temper of all the other metal parts will have changed. Any parts that were heat treated prior to the fire have now changed. I would have to agree with the others that it would probably be not only easier but also cheaper to just replace the whole unit.
