Help to identify Yanmar

Not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes. I just picked up a project Yanmar; I think its a FX20D or FX22D. The guy I got it from was starting to part it out and was sitting on his place gathering green from the trees, so right now its pretty butt ugly. The seat/attachments are off of it, and came with bucket/arm assembly, fenders, and seat, tires are good. I plan on cleaning it up, putting her back together for use. I found out from someone that data plates were usually riveted on the rear fenders and a lot of times taken off for painting then never put back on, which is what happened to this one, cause the rivet holes are there, no plate. Pictures aren't real good, but any guess at what model? Where else would I find the model #/ serial #, and/or the year? Thanks everybody!

Some better pictures, and a little bit more detail about the machine (How many cylinders, what type of transmission and how many gears, PTO speeds, tire size, etc) would really help. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that it it might be a 3 cylinder, because I think I see 3 injector lines. I don't think it is an FX20 or 22, because they have the exhaust on the right hand side of the engine. An F17 or FX16 has the exhaust on the left hand side, as this one does.

On the older Yanmars, you will find a stamped number with the model and serial number on the side of the transmission, just about where your left ankle bone goes. I don't know where it is on the FX series.

The engine should have a data plate on it, giving a model number and specifications. That will help, too, if you can't find a serial number on the transmission.

Its looks like you have a good project on your hands. I am not as familiar with Yanmars, but I know that they are great machines. From the looks of the frame, it almost resembles a Satoh Beaver based on the color scheme. I could be way off, and paint is not a good defining factor. 284 International has some very good advise on where to find the data. Anyways, good luck with it, and I hope that it workes out well for you. let us know if you are able to find a model number, or serial number.

Thanks for the advice, 284 International and NHMitch, I will post on the Yanmar forum too. This is a 3 cylinder, 3 speed tranny. It has a left hand shift lever, and on the shift pattern printed on the handle is 3 2, (top) and 1 R (bottom). I found two sets of #痴 on the left side of the transmission; it looks like there are funny looking X痴 with a line through them like stars, but the firs one looks like this: *1120*UB21958*, then one right below it: *9A17B*. I'll post more pics on the Yanmar forum later today.

Take some pictures of all the controls, shifters, and so forth. Are there only three forward speeds plus reverse, or is there a range shifter somewhere as well?

Make sure to get the engine number, too.

What size tires are on it?

Is there a dashboard? What gauges, lights, or other controls/instruments are there? What clues do they give?

Finally, is there any way you can share some better pictures? These posted really don't much more than give an idea of what's going on.

That was my first impression. I see the hood hinge is nearly at the top of the radiator - is that characteristic of a Satoh? It might help to inquire in the Satoh forum too.

I don't think it is a Beaver or equivalent because of the exhaust positioning, but the hood position and color sure seem like a Satoh. The left hand shift lever feature seems to match with an F17, as do the six lug front wheels.

Other things I see that may be useful include a filter of some sort behind the left stirrup, a peculiar and steeply angled front driveshaft, and what looks like a vertically plunging differential lock. More possible identifiers are the oddly shaped port for the transmission dipstick, the locking mechanism for the the point lift, and certainly other things, among them a 3T75engine.

There is a lot of clutter around the fenders and deck, but the photos are so grainy I can't even pretend to know what they depict. So, who else can put more useful and experienced eyes on the photographs and help construct a dichotomous key for unknown imported grey market tractors?
