Tractor
John deere 2440
My JD 2440 has a pin hole sized stream of hydrauilic oil coming from between the transnission housing and a piece located behind the brake control valve. This is my first tractor and I could not find a name for this part in the shop manual;however, it is visible just behind the oil filler opening in the transmission housing. My question. Is this possibly a seal that has deteriorated or is this yet another of a long list of problems that is beginning to make me sorry I ever drank the "green Kool-Aid". I would appreciate any input.
Thanks

My Farmall 140 is a '54, and if not for it, I would not have had anything planted on my farm. The JD has 4513 hours( what I believe to be at most an average work load) on it for the age, and today it sits w 4521 hours after 7 months of almost non-operation. Not ONE day has gone by that something has failed or broken and I have put almost three thousand add'l dollars into it. Today it sits in the middle of the field. Broken again. Maybe this is the one JD tractor that shimmys below the bar, but it is the first I have owned and there is nothing closer to the heart than your own. I'm not jumping off the ship, but I know many others that own old tractors, and several farmers that can not believe the trouble this tractor has caused.
Never the less, thanks for your unhelpful, uninformed, unintelligent response.

Have you looked on jdparts.com? I am not familiar with a 2440, so the parts breakdowns look Greek to me. That is generally a good site to help with stuff.

I am sorry that you have had a bad time with you Deere. I know that is a bummer.

You are Welcome!!

I cannot believe you would expect a almost 30 year old tractor to be trouble free!!?? It must not have been well cared for or you did not do a careful inspection when you bought it. If you want and need it to perform like a 2 yr old $85000 tractor you should have bought one. None the less Good luck, I sincerely hope this is the last problem you have with it.

i have a ford doing the same thing. it is an auto trans. hydraulic pump and trans pump are mounted in converter housing. hydraulic blew a seal in pump allowing fluid to bypass into bell housing and leak out like yours may be doing.
if yours is auto check for an overfill of trans fluid.

Did you find where the leak is coming from?

Hi carolinadozer,

I'm sorry to hear you've got so much 'bad luck' with the 2440 I know how frustrating that can be .

Below you'l find the link On Line Parts Catolog with all the parts and drawings. I hope you can use it to find at least how stuff is called, makes discussing at (with the dealer for example) a little easier.

John Deere - Parts Catalog go to the model search button in the top menu and search for 2440.

I'll try if I can find some more to help you out.

Take care,
André

Everyone, Thanks a ton for taking the time to reply and help. My unidentified part was the hydraulic pressure control valve and the leak is more than likely an O-ring that had deteriorated. I recently had the filter cleaned and replaced and my thought (however inexperienced) is that the added pressure from a properly functioning hydraulic system was a little much for the old seal @ the o-ring. My local JD dealer identified the part and hopefully it will be back in business this weekend.
Thanks again for any input, and may all the farmers and hunters have a safe and prosperous year.
