Yanmar 1610D
I have a 1610d (390 odometer reading) with the power shift transmission and when the tractor is in gear, any gear, it will make a winding, sort of a shrieking noise. The tractor will not make this noise until operating temp is near normal. The other day it just seemed like it fell out of gear. I tried changing speeds and gears all the way to creeper but it wouldn’t move. I got off and checked and nothing was visibly wrong. Five minutes later I started up the tractor and everything was fine but the winding noise is still there. What could it be? The engine and PTO sound fine. I only get the noise when it’s in gear. I have been cutting grass for the most part and haven’t stressed the tractor under any loads and my land is flat so not hills. Any help would be appreciated. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Thanks,
Richard

Richard, I am going to take a stap at this, until someone else has something more substantial to offer. I suspect the pressure plate fingers or a problem in the clutch pack itself. I have noticed that the pressure plate takes a little more beating on shuttle shift than on a normal geared transmission.
I have split my 1601 and 1610 and there is a noticeable difference in wear and discoloration on (pp) one vs. the other. My taredown of the 1610D was because of a whine and slight chatter during warm operation. Replacing everything eliminated the problem. BTW, the clutch disk did not indicate much use, but was slightly polished.

I am going on the assumption that fluids, linkage and alignments have already been checked.

Perhaps someone may be able to zero in on the exact problem. Good luck, Mark

All of my 1610s seem to have more gear whine than all the other Yanmer models that I have bought. The powershift transmission will not work (and the tractor will not move) if there is low hytran fluid or a clogged filter. As far as a shrieking noise, that sounds like a clutch problem as Mark suggested.

Thanks Keith and Mark. The fluids and linkages seem okay. As far as the filter goes, where would that be? Is it relatively easy to get to?If it turns out to be the pressure plates and/or clutch plates need to be replaced, how large of a job will that be? I will look over the things you mentioned tomorrow just to make sure. Wont hurt for a second look.

Richard, It would be best to drain hydraulic fluid in to a large catch pan.

Follow your return line (the big one) from the hydraulic pump all the way to the back to the gear case / hyd. housing under your tractor. Should be 3 bolts on the flanged end of that line.
Remove bolts and line to expose steel filter. Clean with solvent, dry and replace. Use a new gasket (or make one) and very thin coating of gasket sealer. It is best to replace fluid with new JD 303 or equally rated.

This is, most likely the problem. Mark

Mark,
I think the line comes into the transmission on the right side and has a single large bolt attaching it. The filter is behind the plate with 3 bolts, which is located on the left side, directly across from that line. I will try to attach a picture for Richard.

Rich

Thanks for the attachment. I was going to reply and ask but you beat me to it. I will look at it tonight. Did'nt have time yesterday. Is this normal wear and tear for this tractor? Could i be shifting the power-shift improperly?
Thanks,
Richard

I got to the filter with no problems. It looked dirty and i cleaned it up and let it dry. Is there an equivalent fluid to the JD303 that i can use? I can get the JD303 its just a little out of the way for me. I drained about 5 gallons of fluid. Is this too much fluid for a 1610d. I was looking at some other posts that said it's capacity was closer to 3.5 to 4 gallons.
Thanks,
Richard

You should be able to pick up JD 303 equalivent at TSC or rual auto parts stores. Sorry I dont recall the capacity but I dont think its 5 gallons...probably closer to 3.5. - 4 without hydraulicly operated implements.
